TALON

Sandbox Realism

Talon is an open minded unit/gaming community that plays ARMA the way it is meant to be played - tactical fun. We enjoy all aspects of the game, especially the sandbox element. Most groups seem to forget this aspect of ARMA and tie members down with specfic roles, gear, and missions, but not Talon. Our sole focus is to play ARMA tactically, so we only focus on the mission at hand, whether it be a direct action mission conducted by special operation forces or an uprising conducted by villagers of the local town.

Because of this, Talon does not do ranks or even a formal command structure. Each member is treated as an equal from the day they are accepted. We approach each mission with an open-mind and let members have the freedom to bounce around between roles required for the mission at hand. WIth that being said, we still approach the game in a stategic sense (i.e. we don't go running around with .50 cals and Javelins) and have a solid base of procedures to ensure everyone operates on the same page. We play each mission to win and we conduct regular gameplay and training, however, we never lose sight of the fact we are here to have a good time.

Talon seeks to create an immersive and fun atmosphere by using ACE/ACRE in dynamic campaigns and joint operations with other groups. Talon is ready to conduct any operation anywhere - at anytime.

What you can expect from Talon:

  • Dynamic and immersive campaigns
  • COOP/TVT missions
  • Variety in gameplay
  • A good ol' time

Requirements to Join

  • 18+ years of age (younger members may still apply, but it is on a case by case basis)
  • Working microphone
  • ARMA 2 Combined Operations (ARMA 2/ARMA2OA)

Monthly Update

It has been exactly one month since Talon opened its doors to the public. Since then, Talon has acquired 12 full fledged - regularly active members and has 10 current applicants. We also acquired a 32-man game server, which we leave open for public play and upgraded to a larger teamspeak. We have also conducted Joint Trainings and Joint Operations with the Raynor's Raiders and most recently, the 4th Dragoons. We are in the process of scheduling more and are always willing to work alongside/against any group in ARMA 2.

The things that seperate an applicant from a member of Talon is completion of the Talon Basic Training Course and showing regular activity within the squad.

Here is a basic overview of what you can expect from the course:

Talon Basic Training Lesson Plan

  • Expectations
  • Basic ACE/ACRE use
  • Formations/Movement
  • Basic Land Navigation
  • Basic Marksmanship
  • Fire & Manuever
  • Crew Served Weapons/Launchers
  • Grenades/Explosives
  • Aerial Operations
  • MOUT

This course is the foundation of our squad and allows everyone to work together in a tactical environment. After completing our first class, Class 001, we began our first dynamic deployment.

Operation Razor's Edge

Without spoiling the storyline of the campaign I'll place up the warning order and information for the first mission:

An in-game screenshot of Talon members conducting workup training for Op Herrick 16

November has been a busy month for Talon. Today we finished the last mission of our first campaign Operation Razor's Edge. Operation Razor's Edge was a special operation forces campaign and everyone had a great time over its course.

Take a look at the summary and some of the media for the campaign:

Mission 1: United Nations Peacekeeping Force Chernarus

After a civil war broke out between the NAPA and ChDKZ in Chernarus, United Nations peacekeeping forces were sent in to aid the local civilian populace. The UNPFC was sent to the town Gvozdno to deliver supplies to the villagers and offer them refuge at the UN encampment. The UNFPC was sent to off to find some missing villagers and discovered a mass grave and on the way back to base their convoy was ambushed. This resulted in UN and NATO forces increasing the military presence in the region.

Mission 2: Operation Razor's Edge

The US Ambassador to Chernarus convoy was ambushed on his way out of the country and the ambassador was taken hostage by ChDKZ forces. The ambassador was located in Berezino, held by forces from a ChDKZ SF Unit commanded by Yuri Olov, and a JSOC Task force was sent to rescue him. Commander Petrov Milanov, of the NAPA forces agreed to use his mechanized platoon to create a diversionary attack, which allowed the JSOC forces to sneak in the back of the compound and extract the ambassador with minimal contact.

Mission 3: Operation Archangel

A US pilot was shot down doing recon over Chernarus. The Pilot was taken to the town of Dolina and put in an abandoned warehouse. A JSOC Task force was sent to extract the pilot, destroy the plane wreckage, and recover any intel. Upon rescuing the pilot, he alerted the JSOC force that his black-box was taken to an abandoned factory on the outskirts of Orvlets. The JSOC force conducted a raid on the factory and recovered the black-box, which contained recon photos of ChDKZ strong holds in the area.

Mission 4: Operation Reaper

NAPA Forces alongside a JSOC task force were tasked with conducting direct action missions against 2 key ChDKZ strongholds with hopes of locating ChDKZ Leader Nikolai Volkoff and putting a stop to the ChDKZ war effort. The first strong hold was a ChDKZ encampment located at Devil's Castle and the other was a vehicle depot located in Stary Sobr. The missions were conducted with great success and at the Stary Sobr stronghold intel containing the position of Volkoff was recovered. A mission to capture Volkoff at is Compound near the castle Zub was conducted and Volkoff surrendered.

Mission 5: Operation Endgame

After news of Volkoffs capture got out most of the ChDKZ forces layed down their arms. A meeting between Milanov and Volkoff was set in downtown Chernogorsk to sign an official cease fire agreement. A JSOC task force was tasked with providing security for the internal perimeter of Chernogorsk while NAPA forces controlled the external perimeter. Once the HVTs were taken to the meeting, a strange video message appeared and the last remanants of ChDKZ forces assaulted the town, with support from BM21 Grad Rocket Strikes. The JSOC force was able to repel the attack long enough for the HVTs to be extracted via helicopter, however most of the unit died in the attack.

It is unclear who was the mastermind behind the attack, however, most believe it was the ruthless Yuri Olov making a power play.

Upcoming Events:

We are beginning the workup for our next deployment Operation Herrick 16: 2PL Tour of Duty

Here is a brief description:

The 2PLTour of Duty campaign is a 6-8 mission campaign designed to immerse the Talon group in a tour of duty of a British Infantry Platoon operating out of a patrol base within hostile territory in Afghanistan between April and October 2012 as part of Herrick 16.

The main goal of the campaign is not only to immerse and entertain, but also to really push the current TTPs used by today's infantry sections. This will in turn allow for a much faster succession rate in training practices. Infantry tactics are always learned before any of the small unit tactics we've looked at previously, and it goes over all the basics necessary to progress training, allowing increasing complexity in combat situations.

As usual we have been/will be conducting our weekly organized training and operation nights starting at 5pm EST on Tuesday and Thursdays. However, we are constantly playing ARMA throughout the week so there is always a chance to play.

If you are interested in joining Talon feel free to send us a PM here or check out our website:

I'll leave you guys with some gameplay videos. See ya next month!
