TPWC AI suppression system

Anybody able to share some server logs with details about this?

I'll try to replicate the issue and see what could be done to avoid the issue.

We may need to add an option to enable/disable vehicle suppression if it can't be fixed.

Got huge fps drops today everytime a mounted gun (50cal) fired. Both dingos from ACR and M2 on HMMWV. People in my group was getting it aswell. Don't have any server logs unfortunately

Right so we did another test today with 40 players and got MASSIVE FPS drops when M2 fired.

So we just did a test with debug, 10 players, no real lag.. everyone shot M2 :)

Here you can see some duration = 0.05... and we get low FPS there.

My guess is that when you do lots of suppression on one unit the game gets lag. Its like you get a buffer of suppression, then the server dumps all at once and we get 3000 desync on each player. Not sure why this happens.

New to bug reporting to ArmA 2, but after playing with the clan earlier tonight, we' decided to hit the issue head on.

I've washed the data some, but not all of it, to make it easier to sort on duration. The findings detail that normal for my computer is duration between 0,03 to 0,05, I have some below and some above. The real eye opener that didnt fit the pattern was durations of 0.5, spot on, several times.

Please look here for further details on the findings, I believe the lag experienced is caused from a loop or script that suddently for some cause takes too long and times out during execution.

Thanks for the logs!

It seems there's a bug with assigning EventHandlers to vehicles: they should be assigned only 1 EH, however there keep getting new EH's assigned, so they end up with a large number of EH's assigned. I suspect this most likely causes a lot of overhead when shooting resulting in FPS drop.

Wait for proper TPWC AI suppression system release, since bDetect v0.73 BETA initialization is slightly different.

@tpw: if it's not so already, please put bDetect debug off per-default into next TPW AI release: debugging/logging code is responsible for almost 30-80% of overall framework load in ordinary circumstances.

Debug was just meant for editing/debugging purpose only, not production release.

Hi guys. I will release a new version with bDetect 0.73 very soon. -Coulum- has submitted some very nice skills modification code which won't make it into this next version, but should appear in a day of 2. Sorry about the slackness, RL issues to deal with.

Fabrizio_T, bdetect logging should be off by default, users need to set tpwcas_debug to 2 to activate bdetect logging.

Idle question, and possibly one that's already been answered: instead of soldiers going prone after x nearby shots, might it be better to handle suppression probabilistically? I wot not how much overhead that would introduce, but it would make the behavior that much more realistic.

If I remember right, the formula for 'at least one success in n trials' is 1-(fn), where f is the probability of failure. Thus, a 25% chance of suppression per round would mean a 76% chance after 5 rounds and a 94% chance of suppression after 10 rounds; a 15% chance per round would mean a 55% chance after 5 rounds and an 80% chance after 10 rounds; so on and so forth.

Interesting idea count_roland. Would require quite a few under the bonnet changes to implement, but interesting anyway. I will put in into our pile of things to consider for future releases.

Looking at tpwcas_supstate.sqf, it might actually simplify things a little. No need to count bullets - just check against a random number whenever an enemy bullet passes, and if the check fails, set tpwcas_supstate to 3 the same as it's done now, and game on. Line 41 is the suppress/no suppress decision, correct? If I'm reading right, changing line 41 to something like

if ((random 1) < 0.15) then //brown trousers

would do the trick. (0.15 being the chance of suppression; any number, of course, would do.)

edited to add:

ah, not quite - I see it's assigning tpwcas_supstate anew each round, which means that if only line 41 is changed, they'll only flicker into tpwcas_supstate 3, not stay in it. But what if lines 24-44 (give or take) were replaced by the aforementioned, then the rest of the 41-44 if block?

Appears to be working. I commented out line 24, then lines 36-44, then below that, inserted:

Testing with a pair of opposed riflemen and text debugging suggests that it's working. Fire away next to the poor chap's head, and he'll take a knee, and the numbers beneath him will turn yellow and increment with (mostly) each shot (which appears to be a bullet speed issue - removing the mp5 ammo from the prohibited list and using that works unfailingly), and at some random point, they'll turn red and the soldier will promptly hit the deck. Wait several seconds, and the numbers will reset to a white zero, and the soldier will stand up and wait for the next round of experiments.

Anyway, just a thought and a thank-you for an indispensable mod.

What's the minimum possible value for tpwcas_ir that won't cause any problems with the mod (I think someone said that small values will cause errors in calculations)?

I think that it's quite illogical that suppression doesn't work in CQC situations.

I wouldn't say it's illogical for enemies not to hit the deck at 25m - at that range, you're really better off just opening fire where you are, because in the second or two it's going to take to get on the ground, your opponent is going to get off several free shots, at a range where they're unlikely to miss. I would, however, think that close-range fire should affect skills. I know if someone shot at me from 25m, I'd be too busy soiling myself to worry about proper sight picture and trigger discipline as I tried to return fire.

It would be perfect if CQC suppression worked that way. Lowering skills and making weapons all shakey.

You can try dropping the bullet ignore radius (default 25m) if you want. I probably wouldn't drop it below the bullet detection radius (default 10m) though. As for the bullet detection radius, that's the one which you really shouldn't drop much below 10m or detection starts to become very erratic.

There is a bug in the latest version!

You forgot to update tpwcas.sqf with a correct call for bdetect!

it still says:

call compile preprocessFileLineNumbers "tpwcas\bdetect072.sqf"; //bullet detection framework

but correct should be:

call compile preprocessFileLineNumbers "tpwcas\bdetect073.sqf"; //bullet detection framework

Another bug found!

bdetect_init_done is not defined before tpwcas.sqf reaches waitUntil { bdetect_init_done}; .

First off, love the mod. Great work.

Toying around further, I don't think the p(suppress) system as given will do. A 15% chance of suppression seems to pan out to suppression after an average of a little over six shots, but the average is skewed by some very high shot counts (a couple that were well over twenty!) - throwing out the outliers, it's more like four. That seems to make soldiers a bit too sensitive, but dropping the suppression chance makes another problem much worse: it looks ridiculous when one of the outliers stands there tempting fate long after all his friends have decided that discretion is the better part of valor. Two possible solutions stand out: probability tiers, e.g. 5% for <5 shots, 15% for 5-10 shots, 50% for >10 shots, and bookending, e.g. no suppression before (say) three shots, guaranteed suppression after ten.

Well to tell you the truth, if I was under fire, I would sure as hell not care HOW many shots were falling around me, but would be running for cover ASAP!

In my missions I lower this value (8) to THREE shots passing close for AI to react. This seems more believable, although itbdoesmstrain the server a little more.

Correct, i basically agree.

Yet i would make lowly trained units react less promptly.

I can't agree on this, humans are humans: depending on skill, training and "mood" they do behave differently.

We may dampen the possibility of outliers (based on a skill related threshold, for example), but taking it out altogeter is a minus in my opinion.

I don't like tiers too, a bit unrealistic and for sure nobody counts bullets in real life.

To me there are 2 key factors really making you go prone:

1) perceiving a bullet whizzling by;

2) thinking that means threat to you;

When BOTH factors are acknowledged you do drop down.

So i think the best solution would be triggering the drop-down action based on a per-bullet based percentage, loosely proportional to unit skill.

At least it worked fine for me in some simple experiments i did much time ago.
