Barrel heats up after firing

Recommended Posts

I just noticed just now that the barrel of your gun actually heats up after firing.... though it's only visual effect. You can test it by firing a rifle or MG and look at the gun through thermal imaging...

I dont know if this has existed since OA or in recent patches, but one must ask the question... whats next? Barrel overheating? rounds cook-off? accuracy drop, etc... can it be done?

That's a normal OA feature.

ACE 2 implements overheating that causes increased muzzle smoke and inaccuracy.

Is that so? Haha... just show that I rarely play a night mission, so never actually noticed it just now :)

BIS might get a little thing, like barrels heating up when viewed by thermal imaging, but they're missing the very big and important thing, the effect this should have, overheating the barrel when it heats up too much.

After all, this is the whole reason that machine guns exist, and why most of them have quick change barrels, to give a sustained fire capability that assault rifles lack. In real life, you can't fire thousands of rounds through an assault rifle without pausing every few hundred rounds to let the barrel cool off, so you shouldn't be able to do that in the game either.

Can you even overheat an assault rifle with the inventory-load of ammo you can carry in the game?

Yes, definitely.

From the official guidelines for the M4:

"(B) FIRING 140 ROUNDS, RAPIDLY AND CONTINUOUSLY, WILL RAISE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE BARREL TO THE COOK-OFF POINT. AT THIS TEMPERATURE, ANY LIVE ROUND REMAINING IN THE CHAMBER FOR ANY REASON MAY COOK-OFF (DETONATE) IN AS SHORT A PERIOD AS 10 SECONDS.

...

(D) SUSTAINED RATE OF FIRE FOR THE M16 SERIES RIFLES AND M4 SERIES CARBINES IS 12-15 ROUNDS PER MINUTE. THIS IS THE ACTUAL RATE OF FIRE THAT A WEAPON CAN CONTINUE TO BE FIRED FOR AN Indefinite LENGTH OF TIME WITHOUT SERIOUS OVERHEATING.

No operator should empty more than 4 magazines rapidly."

Well, at least an Ak is not so flimsy, it's reliable enough to keep working even when so overheated that it's on fire :)

These videos clearly shows that an assault rifle is not a machine gun, and should not be used for sustained firing. A feature that should be simulated in the game.

This is real war?

This guy is stupid. If I´m correct then he set up that camera before the fight to record his own awesomeness. Well didn´t work as expected.

It would suck to have his gun.

AKs are very durable. Countrys that have build them before can use their knowledge to build modern guns that are as reliable as the good old AK
