bravo93 37 Posted December 26, 2011 Will the Physics Engine that BIS are using for Arma 3 support micro destruction. For example if I have a high calibre weapon such as a GPMG, will I be able to destroy enemy cover such as walls?
Black Cat 10 Posted December 26, 2011 I dont think the current ARMA engine supports that, besides I believe a dev said that the destruction system is staying the same, if you want microdestruction go play BF3.
-=Grunt=- 10 Posted December 26, 2011 I just hope that all walls and cover will have proper penetration now... Like hiding behind a brick wall won't completely protect you, a 12.7mm MG or sniper rifle will penetrate it, etc.

Go test it. Those Takistan mud brick walls even stop 30mm AP, though. Must be made of titanium.
dunedain 48 Posted December 26, 2011 (edited) if you want microdestruction go play BF3 I've seen that kind of anwser at least a hundred times here. Please for Christ's sake stop being such biggots, it's embarrassing ... It's an interesting question, would be good to know if at least it will be possible for modders to had such features. sakura_chan 9 Posted December 26, 2011 It could be modded, but it would require a ton of work. It wouldn't be any different than the area specific damage that most buildings have.
Messiah 2 Posted December 26, 2011 Those Takistan mud brick walls even stop 30mm AP, though. Must be made of titanium. Although you say that, I've heard plenty of reports about Afghani compounds resisting absurd levels of damage in the real world. Never doubt the power of compacted and dried mud. rye1 21 Posted December 26, 2011 And the fact some of them were mashing all kinds of stuff inbetween that mud.. including steel! :D
onlyrazor 11 Posted December 26, 2011 I thought "Micro Destruction" was some sort of DICE trademark. But, yes, penetration and destruction modeling improvements would be welcome.

antoineflemming 14 Posted December 26, 2011 You know, micro destruction could be simulated. If BIS would give walls damage models like structures have, then there could be micro destruction. It wouldn't be like DICE's system, but it could still work. So for walls, and cover, bullets could wear them down. Just like rockets and heavy weapons wear down buildings. wipman 1 Posted December 26, 2011 Hi, i think that they gonna improve the objects penetration aswell the objects destruction; the addition of the PhysiX or whatever sure that gonna improve this field too. Let's C ya

You can't 100% trust BIS's dev's words. Sometimes they said this would never be in the game, some months later you will see it added in the beta patch.:)
slatts 1978 Posted December 28, 2011 didn't BIS already do this? Game2 anyone?

Must be made of titanium. Its possible in ArmA 2, The mud and brick are just textures and dont really change the penetration because basically its just a picture. Depending on what your trying to accomplish, it would depend on the geometry lod of the model and the armor tmk.
PuFu 4600 Posted December 28, 2011 yeah they did test it, so in theory it is possible to have some more advanced destruction. Is it actually needed? i don't really know, especially if the debris are just particles like with say...bf3...
no use for a name 0 Posted December 28, 2011 I would gladly welcome more detailed destruction; but it doesn't have to be nearly as detailed as say BF3. I'd just be happy if you could blow up sandbag MG nests/bunkers lol

If there is a micro destruction in ARMA3, I wish AI's body can take advantage of the shape of the cover to avoid of expose. Hance when a cover is patially destroyed AI will change his posture to adapt to the rest of this cover or have to select another larger cover. But I think it is too complex. djfluffwug 10 Posted December 28, 2011 Shame because it would add alot of immersion. Imagine being inside a bunker as an RPG heads your way or being behind sandbags as a tank drives over them :D I guess it would really take up quite a bit of CPU power (Which we know ArmA hogs already). And with this new island, there will be an even bigger CPU/GPU drain (All the geometry :( ).

DaveP 66 Posted December 28, 2011 (edited) didn't BIS already do this? Game2 anyone? I have a feeling that destruction as we saw it (only ever in photos) evolved in to what we see in arma 2, where more 'parts' of a building are destroyable, as long as they are divided in to said parts Although you say that, I've heard plenty of reports about Afghani compounds resisting absurd levels of damage in the real world. Never doubt the power of compacted and dried mud. Mud walls/huts are the original composite materials -Concrete Rebar or even to a degree carbon fibre and fibreglass are only vaguely dissimilar in construction. The hardness of the dried mud is offset by the flexibility and lateral strength of the woven wooden branches/sticks within -ergo the best properties are apparent while the lesser properties are negated Edited December 28, 2011 by DaveP
