Grand Theft Auto V

I get the petition, the bible has plenty of silly things such as the promoting of killing neighbors who wear multi material clothes (what?)

But I don't think this is the best way to go about it, you could look at it as a silly vs silly or combating ignorance with another ignorance, it doesn't tackle the core of the issue nor does it go on to try and unravel the accusations and claims that support one side.

It says "Oh yeah well you shouldn't have this either" rather than "You are wrong and here is why."

It says "Oh yeah well you shouldn't have this either" rather than "You are wrong and here is why."

But I think it does exactly that. It shows target, and other companies, that if you accept one petition you open up the floodgates for all kinds of nonsense.

Hadn't considered that but depending on your point of view that too could be bad because it could be interpreted to say "Do not listen to petitions" which is a bit of a double edged sword.

It's still not quite tackling the core of the issue though which is a video game as a scape goat for a militant group or one that doesn't understand why things are the way they are in this game, and worse try to use the "Think of the children" reasoning when that fault lies on parenting through and through.

You should educate yourself first, then consider if the petition actually makes sense, then consider if you should do actions.

Because the sexist claims for gta5 are ridiculous. Male and Female civilians (including hookers) are treated the exact same in the game. The possibility to kill female (and male) civilians exists, but not without consequences and the game does not tell you to do it.

They make all those statements how the game is sexist towards females, but nowhere is it mentioned that the same applies to males. And the people who vote for it are neither videogame customers nor can they truly have informed themself about the truth of those statements. They just go "Awmygad, really? Thats so horrible, this needs to be forbidden, i'll tell all my friends how horrible this is" and warmonger against the game. "Social Warriors". I absolutely despise those kinds of people. Retarded hypocritic actionism is what i would call it, kinda reminds me of the witchhunt. Now that they got a little stone rolling they'll try to continue from there.

Totalbiscuit also made a vid about it, discussing the matter.

Like Totalbiscuit say its ok for movies and series to have violence agains woman but in games its a problem, and something you didn hear in this piece or others about the petition is that hey sold the older version of GTA5 for the older consoles and it was no problem of issues with petitions, but only when the new version with the first person came out it was suddenly a big drama its even shows in that first picture in that petition(i havend played it so i dont know if you could kill ppl with axes in the previous version)

and we can then also start attacking other stuff in the game like killing animals, killing cops, and other stuff where many petitions can be against for the violence etc,

nice vid by totalBiscuit, i agree on all points

It is a violent game. You enrol for that as soon as you want to make a purchase. Being a violent game, it is R(+18) rated. The violence in it makes little distinction between genders. So where the fuck is the problem then?

I am the least misogynist person out there, in part due to the way i have been raised and the fact that my better half is all for equality between genders. i have shown her the vid and briefly told her about the issue, and, just like most women out there, she said no one sane enough would consider that discrimination. Yes, you can kill hookers, but you can do that in A2 just as well.

It is a mater of options. No one is forcing it upon anyone. The decision not to sell the game anymore is such a coward move from Target.

This sort of petition is shit, especially considering the entertainment environment we live in. There are more movies than games released every year that have more gore and meaningless violence. At least in this game you have the option NOT to resort to rampage if you don't want to, which is not what can be said about movies where you have no control.

On the same note, i always wondered how come gore, violence, gibs, blood and alike gets a 16+ rating (just have a look over the amount of tv shows depict that), while if you put into a movie/show/game nudity you get a 18+ rating. How come US ended up being so pudic (even without considering the fact that 99% of porn industry resides there)..I mean during the average Joe/Joan lifespan, he/she is more prone to see more tits and cocks than internal organs of another human anyways....

The Violence in the video games is still a thing? jeez it reminds the shitstorm in '70s with slasher movies and zombie gory movies

You must get that it is just a video game , that was made to be fun and open world to represent the current life style in US also you can play whatever way you want it , the game doesn't force you to do the violence

also you should be old enough (18+) to play such games but that's a parents issue that can't control their young stupid kid/s , if some kid gets too crazy about it then it needs some psychiatrist :p

Also got to remember November 25th was White ribbon day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Day_for_the_Elimination_of_Violence_against_Women

I'm not against white ribbon day, I support it. I saw my sister beat up by her BF but that's getting offtopic.

So there was allot of media and social media talk about violence against women for the last couple of weeks so its easy for a petition like this to gain momentum.

There is also violence against men in the game as well, it's not directed at women specifically and the player is not forced to kill any woman except I think twice within the story. But you kill countless of men and even torture one by doing things such as putting battery clamps on his NIPPLES and electrocuting him. The people that support things such as this petition are hypocrites. The game is a piece of entertainment, just like a movie. It is art. IF you do not like it, do not read or watch anything about it and do not buy it. Don't force your views onto someone else, as you are not even forced to look at this game.

Take Two CEO had practically the same thing to say. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

"It's one thing for someone to not want to buy a piece of content, which is completely understandable," Slatoff said. "And that's really the solution. If you don't like it and it's offensive to you, then you don't buy it. But for a person or a group of people to try to make that decision for millions of people... We have 34 million people who bought Grand Theft Auto, and if these folks had their way, none of those people would be able to buy Grand Theft Auto. And that really just flies in the face of everything that free society is based on. It's the freedom of expression, and to try to squelch that is a dangerous and slippery slope to go down. So it's really more disappointing for us in that regard than it is in the context of our business. Our business is going to be completely unaffected by this; it doesn't make a difference to us. At the end of the day though, it's not something you want because it's a poor leadership decision."[/Quote]

Nice addition, but it's a shame it only accommodates 4 players.

Plus it will require to be online to play it and it will also look at some of your hardware. It might means that if you change some of your hardware, your game won't work anymore.

Lets see if we have some explanation from Rockstar.

Other requirements: Installation and online play requires log-in to Rockstar Games Social Club (13+) network; internet connection required for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification; software installations required including Rockstar Games Social Club platform, DirectX, Chromium, and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 sp1 Redistributable Package, and authentication software that recognizes certain hardware attributes for entitlement, digital rights management, system, and other support purposes.

You won´t need to be online to play it. This is the same thing they did with GTA4 where you had to activate the game online during the installation (boy what a really tedious and frustrating installation that was.... Install game, install Rockstar social club, install GFWL, install drivers, activate the game on overloaded servers, do this, do that....longest and most complicated install I have ever witnessed...), then you could play SP offline. The entitlement verification menas that you will have to log in from time to time though.....

The Hardware recognizing does worry me a bit.

It seems a little odd for a Steam-activated game to verify your PC. It kind of goes against a large advantage of Steam yes? i.e. I can have it on all my PCs.

We're talking about those pricks at Rockstar,we've been second class citizens for quite awhile now.Not sure if people remember but GTA IV also had drm on drm on drm... and holy hell.

That game had like 4 layers of drm,Steam,Securom,GFWL and Rockstar Social Club.I would say even a 5th one being the game itself considering what a mess of a port was.

Tbh I'm still surprised they didn't requested a dna scan too.Another thing that pisses me off is what the hell is with these sizes lately??True, games grow in size but there's a line where this is getting ridiculous,65gb??They haven't heard of compression?

We're getting quite fast to a point where 2-4TB are like floppy disks.

They probably do cutscenes like in MP3 and that makes the game huge?

Thanks Tonci for reminding me of GTA IV installation nightmare :(. That was fucking stupid. At least they dropped GFWL. Although that was 2008 right? That year was crazy, even Arma 2 had SecuROM IIRC.

Anyway, I thought they figured their "PC policy" out with MP3 and R*SC only but maybe not. Hopefully it will at least be a good port.

It might not be Steam only. GTA IV and MP3 were not.

OK so while I wait the extra 2 months for the GTA 5 release I bought & installed GTA 4 on Steam. Have to say, aside from the download time (I have crappy iNet) I didn't see much problem with it. I had to make a Games For Windows Live account but that was all. I didn't need to make the Rockstar Social account, and any other DRM was invisible to me.

As my first GTA game, I am very impressed with it. I spent about an hour just walking about observing the environment. It's very immersive and *apparently* complex. I know it's all player-centric but it's very well done, the attention to details is amazing. But, I guess it's something Rockstar are known for right? I guess the other parts of the city need unlocking by playing the game, every time I tried to cross a large bridge I became a criminal and was shot :)

Yeah you need to unlock the other parts by playing the story. At this time the bridges are closed due to a terror alert (We won´t let the terrorist take away our freedom, so we will do it before they can. The game is packed with satire). You should check out the TV stations (hillarious) and the ingame internet. Also you might want to pick up the two expansions after you finish the main story, they are actually really good. The main story is a bit on the serious side most of the time (although you will meet some really crazy characters) the first expansion is a biker gang thing, also a bit serious like the main story, the second expansion Ballad of gay Tony (The best IMHO) is more like the old GTAs, lighthearted and hillarious.

I notice on the intro screen I can play either the main game or the "Liberty Island Episodes", which I think are the two expansions you mention yes? As I only bought the GTA4 game itself, I'm going to assume that if I click on Play for these episides I'll be taken to the Steam shop to buy it. Or, maybe I got lucky & really have those expansions :) I'll try it out this weekend.
