For those who don't know, Xenonauts is a proper(unlike some bigass beancounters mikecow FPS)remake of the very classic turn base tactical game X-Com UFO defence.

Now, we all know that Paypal have a history of freezing indle developers accounts, both Minecraft and Project Zomboid had been treaded as such before(with project zomboid having problem with google as well) but with all those happened before and now this, Ithink its time to say that Indle developers should try and stay away from Paypal before releasing.

I would love to know what the hell the peeps at PayPal are smoking. They apparently have a problem with indie developers selling access to "unfinished" games... what the hell? As long as a product/service is being provided in exchange for money, why should PayPal give a shit what state the product is in?

Well if the game is unfinished, a product / service is not being provided? That is probably against PayPal terms and conditions? It would be all too easy for someone to take money and then disappear / go out of business. PayPal would get the flack and abuse from people wanting their money back. It's perfectly understandable. How long is it till the game is finished? When do you actually get something for your money? If the world was a more honest place fine, but it isn't.

Except that in this case you get a beta of the game when you pre-order (much the same way you do when you pre-order minecraft). So you are actually getting something for your money.

It's a legal minefield for PayPal. Even if you get some sort of beta there is no guarantee the finished product will appear. What if the finished product is nothing like what was advertised? Who gets the flack? = PayPal.

I'd suppose that if the risks are outlined clearly in the product then there oughtn't to be a problem.

When do games that are in a state of continuous development become a "finished product"? Short answer: never. From the moment a game is stable and playable, there is basically no difference between what could be considered "beta" or "final". Version numbers become arbitrary.

Look at Minecraft for example. Notch could easily have decided that Minecraft was "officially" out of beta six months ago, then continued to develop it and add content and bugfixes in patches just like before. Objectively nothing would have changed, but to some people such definitions seem to make a major difference for some reason.

I guess any indie developer wanting to sell their game while it is still in development should just decide to push out an "official 1.00 release" version as soon as it's stable, instead of calling it "pre-alpha" or "beta" or whatever. If such arbitrary distinctions satisfy PayPal, great... problem solved.

Paypal seems to be to be more about resellers and traders only such as buyers & sellers and worry too much about refunds for goods not received and questioning payments and complaints based on nothing sent out etc etc. Its not like some on-line bank, dealing with money exchange only.

So it seems as if the model used for Paypal doesn't suite gaming and betas, as mentioned a game is never "finished" its not like someone purchasing some CD's and then they arrive and that's the exchange, done deal. They either need to set up a sub paypal section for gaming industry types changing some of its model to match satisfaction with data and all that this entails or people just move on to something better.

It just seems like Paypal have an issue with themselves, its not for users to have to change anything.
