Frontier Elite 2 Comic

Recommended Posts

Okay, anyone who played games in the early 90's mainly people from the UK will remember the name Elite or Frontier. It was a hugely successful game that still has a big following today. Created by David Braben and Ian Bell, I have made the very first official Elite comic. I recommend anyone who hasn't played it to download the windows vista windows 7 working open gl version of elite 2 and see what it is like. Please bear in mind it did come out in 1992 so don't expect call of duty graphics, its the playability of the game that makes it a winner.

anyhow download the game free and legally here: http://tom.noflag.org.uk/glfrontier/frontvm3-20060623.tar.bz2

and the seperate sound file for the game here: http://tom.noflag.org.uk/misc/frontvm-audio-20060222.tar.bz2

Now for the comic which is really the reason why you came here. It is best viewed in 'fit page' in the display and zoom options in pdf. if you are reading the CBR version its best viewed in 'fit to width' in the view and zoom settings.

Programs used: 3D Studio max 2009, Poser 2010, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects & Comic Life.

You did all the characters? Nicely done comic. Just finished reading half of it (gotta go for now).

I remember Frontier Elite 2 but I mostly played Frontier First Encounters before moving to the X-Universe (X game series created by Egosoft) around 2001.

Speaking about Frontier I couldn't believe how they created such wonderful and advanced game environment back in the early 90's, I mean round shaped rotating planets with atmosphere, thousands of 3d objects including all the ships, stations, planetary docks and finally the world economy.

I like space sims and currently playing X3 Terran Conflict + mods.

Ps. People from outside the UK played Frontier too ;)

For people that played and liked Frontier Elite 2 and its sequel Frontier First Encounter, i can only highly suggest to give a try to the Pioneer space sim

http://pioneerspacesim.net/

It is an excellent open source free game that is very inspired by FE2 and FFE and feature a very good engine with some impressive terrain technology, give a look to a few videos about it.

yes of course i plan to make it a 4-6 episode story providing the interest is there, even though the game actually had no end lol

There cannot be many Frontier players who did not have at least one spare save game slot devoted purely to seeing how far they could get tunnelling through the galaxy :)

yes I had a ship packing over 200 tons of hydrogen fuel only to end up making a misjump into the middle of nowhere with only 2 tons left.

@Sanctuary: Thank you. I could kiss you :p Although Infinity at this point is more visually pleasing, that Frontier Elite 2 has some nostalgia that will be hard to beat.

That is the game I by far spent the most time with - sorry BIS, you don't even come close, despite being on a good 2nd place :D I've completely given up hope on any sequel, and I'm no longer monitoring the frontier forums anymore either.

And yes, I managed to cross the galaxy, all the way to the other end. It had nothing :D Can't recall if I had any misjumps, if I did I just reload and kept on scooping and jumping.

Will take a look at the Comic, eventually - but right now I'm gonna try Pioneer :)

Pioneer has nightly development windows and linux builds available there :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pioneerspacesim/files/nightly/

Usually have more bugfixes and features that the older official release occuring once a month, but may be less stable sometime.

Anyways, it's a very good project, sure it's not infinity but you can explore some really nice breath taking landscape in some places of the universe.

Gave a look to the comic, it's nicely done.

I hope your Jameson will got much better careers than mines :D

Hi Archamedes

You might like to consider Publishing the comic via Lulu.

http://www.lulu.com/

Or some such site.

I am not sure how you stand with regard to copyright though. Maybe contact David Braben and see if he will give his approval?

Kind Regards walker

Great job, I enjoyed it.

I know it's inspired by Elite, but it kinda reminds me of Archimedean dynasty and Emerald "Deadeye" Flint.

Keep up the good work. :)

here is part 2 of the comic again in both pdf and cbr format. I have one more comic to make and it should wrap the story up to a nice conclusion. I hope you enjoy it, part 3 may take a little while before its released because I am working on another comic project called 'psychos.' So be patient and the final chapter will be out in a few months if not sooner.
