The 300m (990ft) carrier has been one of China's worst-kept secrets, analysts say

The Chinese navy's first aircraft carrier has begun its sea trials, the state-run Xinhua news agency has said.

It quoted military sources as saying that the refitted former Soviet warship left its shipyard in the north-east and the trial "would not take a long time".

The move is likely to raise fresh concerns over China's rapid military build-up.

I believe they plan on using the Shenyang J-15, an unlicensed Chinese copy of the Sukhoi Su-33 (Flanker-D).

I don't believe something which I don't know well. Even PLA is still making trials to see what would be suitable for their future aircraft carriers. Nothing could be taken for certain now. But one thing could be definite. PLA will use their own aircrafts instead of imported one.

Maybe we could sell them our two useless carriers and ask the French if they want to sell theirs in the same deal? Three CVF for our Sino friends would solve the hole we have in our procurement so we can get more frigates.

Cute.

The Varyag was bought from Ukraine under the agreement that it wouldn't be converted to military use.

Well, who knows that Varvag used for, since military is all about secrets, don't we all? (even they did leak some of the info to the internet, doesn't mean it's official until the government had announced about it.)

Anyway, about this AC, there's a player already re-textured Gnat's Kuznetsov and Su-33 as PLA Navy's in ARMA2. Not sure if he'll going to release it or not, but I'm sure someone will up for it for the gaming community or something.

No one needs such rubbish in China. Definitely, PLA would be able to make their own real carriers very soon. Now the second-hand vessel is only used for training and trials before the new one comes in.

I might suggest there's something wrong with the process that tries to sell an aircraft carrier for non-military purposes, to a country known for rapidly building up it's military abilities :)

As if that process didn't have "fail" written all over it right from the very beginning. :D

What? You do know that the CVF are under construction right?

Well, Ukraine was strapped for cash then so they weren't really in a position to deny China that sale.

The US's economy doesn't even come close to what Ukraine had experienced in the 1990s. The Ukrainian army for example, had only enough funding on hand to feed its soldiers from January to October. They were left with an 800,000 man military (remember that Ukraine was a staging area for Soviet forces in Europe), the carrier Varyag, the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world (which they disarmed and handed over to Russia), several thousand tanks, hundreds of fighters, a dozen Tu-160 bombers and all the unfinished ships like Varyag.

They couldn't maintain it all and had to sell it.

Oh, and a $2 billion carrier doesn't even come close to solving the US's economic problems. It's not that simple.

So what's the benefit of "independence" ?

Smaller than "alliance", but bigger than "separation". I don't think it's all about the financial, military, technology nor tactical resource benefits to maintain the government, but the very basic things like farming, social and cultural developments.

Maybe US got more benefits than Ukrain itself. At least, it doesn't need to worry the former big bear any more. Now the shape of bear just missing in the map.

Varyag is just like research ships from Japan, but for the Naval Aircraft instead of whales.
