Dear BIS, please, explain "estimation on "disappearing in a pattern" for forests"

Recommended Posts

In latest beta changlog I've noticed this

[82969] Improved: AI is less able to detect enemies in forests (improved estimation on "disappearing in a pattern" for forests).

Can someone explain the technique and the inside details of this process?

In general I understand bots get less xray vision in forests, but I'm interested in knowing how exactly all this measured and calculated.

Thanks in advance. :yay:

OK, first off I'm no more knowledgable about BIS-specific techniques than anyone else not BIS-employed :) these are just my own thoughts.

I might guess that any unit's visibility property is lowered in the presence of trees. So that a guy who might have X amount of "visibility" standing up in the clear, will if he's near trees, have his visibility reduced to that of a prone unit.

I guess this could be done by checking for nearby trees (possible but not as easy as normal objects, and expensive if it needs to be constantly calculated) or by raycasting upward and seeing if the sky is overhead (which is how I assume rain is lessened when you're indoor or under a tree).

In any case, it sounds like a really good step forward. Anything in a bunch of trees should be more difficult to see, and I'm happy to see this improved :)

Why do I get all aroused and estrogen-y whenever I hear raycast......:licklips:
