Interest in a large-scale, long-term multiplayer operation?

Recommended Posts

So back in the old days of OFP:R, I threw around an idea with a few friends that had since died. I'd like to see if there is interest in reviving it.

What i'd like to do is get a community of co-op players together who could structure their own hierarchy and function as a sort of 'task force' that would take on missions from the development group (writers, coders, mission makers, etc) and then plan their operation, rehearse and execute on their own.

For example, a single mission timeline might look something like this-

T-30 days: WARNO given to task force leadership

T-30 to T-23: task force executes PCCs, PCIs, individual and small unit rehearsals to prepare themselves for what they foresee the mission being. For example, the task force commander may start having his aviation units practice certain types of maneuvers, he may start request ISR platforms and intel on target area, etc.

T-23: Task Force receives full order w/supporting intel

T-23 to T-10: Task Force continues to prepare his unit, develops a comprehensive order and plan to its subordinate units, etc

T-10 to T-1: Task Force executes full rehearsals

T-0: Operation conducted

So this would be a very unique experience for the players because it leaves the players to develop their own operation based on the mission statement. The development group will create the mission in the game, and work with the Task Force to include whatever they need for the mission. For example, if the Task Force wants to use certain types of air assets, the development group would go into the mission editor and include them. The Task Force would be ultimately responsible for staffing (the players) the unit, planning, and executing. Unlike a lot of other missions out there, the operation would not come pre-planned with waypoints, selectable units to play, etc. The task force gets what the task force wants (within reason).

What we would need to get this off the ground is simple. First, we would need a development group. I would need the help of members in the community who are experienced in mission making, scripting, etc. Second, we would need the players. The Task Force can be any size; ten players, forty players, we can make the mission whatever size.

So, I guess i'd like to open this up to discussion. What do you guys think? Any questions that you want to ask, go ahead, or forward them to me at hewitt.g@gmail.com
