Community feedback - improvments for Arma3

Recommended Posts

Thought it would be nice if we made a thread with all the improvments we would like to see in Arma3 (with experience from Arma1&Arma2).

Please make a list of features you would like to see in Arma3 and improvments that could be made from previous games, please stay on topic, thanks!

---------- Post added at 07:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:59 PM ----------

I will start with a list of improvments that could be made:

- Better user interface (easier to navigate and control)

- Better and improved AI

- Optimised code and engine performence

- Better blood effects

AI + Better physics is all I could wish for.

There's more...but those are the two main things I'd love improved. Hope the PhysX they mentioned isn't ONLY for vehicles.

Improved Physics and Animations and they'll be on to a winner!

Oh and netcode and optimisation of course.

My two big things are better Animations, and getting rid of the horrible lag that we seen in multiplayer games with people skipping on the screen, or vehicles for that matter, preventing accurate shots.

Am I the only one who wants sound engine improvements?? I'd like to have sonic cracks and more realistic weapon sounds than those vanilla ArmA2 sounds.

For example RWS soniccracks:

That's a fair shout actually, I tend not to think about it though, because the sound mods are amazing, and make an easy substitute.

For me there are a couple of things from OFP that could do with returning.

1. A return to the OFP driving system.

2. Assigning team colours like in OFP

1. Steering vehicles in OFP was very enjoyable, you pointed the cursor where you wanted to go, your head followed it, then it slowly returned to the central position.

Since ArmA, there has been no cursor and when you stopped pushing the mouse left or right the wheels snapped almost instantaeniously back to straight alignment. This meant you had to keep lifting the mouse bringing it back and pushing it across again sharply to maintain a turn, either that or use the WASD keys which were prown to overcompensation. Driving is simply a chore, I personally don't get any joy from it anymore.

2. In OFP you selected the troops you wanted, pressed 9 (for teams), 9 again (for assign), then selected the colour 1-5.

Having done that you would hit 9 (for teams) and then just the number of the colour 1-5 to select the team. This was VERY useful in a fire fight.

Now, since ArmA, after pressing 9 the first option you get is to assign a team colour. You have to press 9,9 to reach the team selection options. This often leads to mistakes in the heat of a firefight and wastes valuable time.

Also, you can no longer select a team this way and then order them around on the map properly.

I would like to see a return to the OFP system or an intorduction to an improved streamlined system...perhaps with improved context sensitive commands.

+1

Something like what they did with BF 3. That 12 min demo made me jizz my pants when the shooting started :p

Pretty much all of these things have seen noticeable improvements since OFP. I think BIS will want to continue to push these areas. But right at the top of my wishlist has to be improved netcode.

  • More realistic fixed wing simulation
  • fully functioning Aircraft instruments and displays
  • Render to texture (mirrors and camera displays)

thats it really, Physics and improved animations are the only other thing i want but they are doing that so ya.

This isn't a must have feature but can we please get some proper muzzle flash effects (but not the overdone one) and not only a texture which pops up when you pull the trigger? :)

Please improve the High Command functions. Make it possible to command all size groups and the ability to give mount order to other groups.

Hey another wishlist type thread which im good at. :)

Number 1

*Netcode MP performance, BIG BIG BIG revamps needed here

*Better lighting engine, I would assume if BIS did improve it they would use deferred lighting so we can have more than one dynamic shadow casting light source at a time. Light thats affected by terrain and objects (no more flashlights through building walls and no more flickering city lights.

*Way better vanilla sound effects, ugh I hate them all, so bad!

*More polished User interface, maybe even a command wheel like in BF2 to issue common commands

*Radically better AI being able to drive in formation, looking for cover inside buildings, ordering them to do building clearance, OH and driving over bridges lol

*Dismembermant/gore and improved blood effects and improved wound treatment mechanics.

*Pre Designed, customizable/moddable FTE modes like those found in that FPDR, you know so we can just get on the game real quick for those days where we dont have alot of time to make a map in the editor. I think this would attract more sales anyways, Spec ops, Convoy escort, defend the bridge, find the downed helicopter and destroy its remains and rescue the pilots, Insurgency and civilian relations, various AC-130 gunship missions, various fire mission support missions, so these missions are like scenarios yet they're alot more dynamic and have adjustable settings and perhaps even allow us to open them up in the editor (module??) and design are own using it as a template.

Now I know people will say go back to playing Call of Duty or Dragon crap or Red river, obviously you cant play Arma like those silly games.

Its fast, its already set up unless you want it to be more custom, its fun with your buds for those days you dont have alot of time to play, its tacticool, its still Arma gameplay.

Ah too much stuff i want ill shut up now im sure BIS is already tired of hearing from me. :p

Hyperthreading and more multi-core processor support.

Make 1st person less of a disadvantage under 3rd person so I will actually use it.

higher contrasted crosshair

wind. I never noticed any wind effects on my sniper shots.

more advanced weather effects - duststorms, fog, mist, rain, lightning, tornadoes (mostly for lols)

#1 wish - simpler mod loading system. I hate the modfolder approach.

As mentioned earlier, better sound. Especially the gunfire. So far the ak74 sounds like someone is hitting a metal can with a stick very fast!

Immersive sounds is almost a must for me, and I just hate downloading mods for this cause.

So my list:

Immersive sound

Better netcode

Better userinterferce

Improved AI (Example: The AI never entered any buildings in Arma 2, this is something that must be done something about)

Animations

Interiors

Anything that make the game more immersive

* Better netcode and optimization! :yay: It drives too many potential players away, people get fed up with the stuttering/lag.

*Better animations and collision detection. It drives too many potential players away, people get fed up with the clunky movements and getting hung up on twigs and such.

* An integrated DL and Addon manegment system like every other FPS out there. Visit a server and if you don't have what they're running, you automatically DL and install it. It drives too many potential players away, people get fed up with trying to find, install and update their addons.

See a trend here? We could have a much more viable MP community if these 3 things were fixed.

Okay, for me as hobby musician:

- Better soundengine / sounds, especially explosions (take Bad Company 2 as an example ;) )

- The soundtrack could be better, but thats not important. Just wanted to mention that there's a lot of great free music under creative commons license out there that could be used. Maybe less rock-like, a bit more electronic.

- The next BIIIG thing is the AI, I know it's a difficult thing in this scale, but it must be better in ArmA 3.

- I'm really glad to see that physics and animations will be improved.

- Optimized netcode is really important too, to get rid of those nasty, nasty lags.

- The lighting system is not the best at the moment, and one more thing I would like to see improved is the particle system.

- You can see a rough color gradient at some particles or the sky in ArmA 2, that's pretty bad for the immersion - I hope this will change in ArmA 3.

The last point is: Please don't add too much postprocessing effects. They make the game look very unrealistic at the moment (at a high cost of FPS). Please make them more decent / natural, especially Bloom.

EDIT: Please don't underestimate the sound, it's at least 40% of the atmosphere in a game. You should find more "adult" voices for your characters, those soldiers sound like 16 year old boys, but have faces like they are 40. It sounds bad when you get commands from a teenager ;)

I had no idea. I've never seen it to be honest.

Well then, no matter :yay:
