Avgeris 64 Posted March 9, 2011 I need some things in order to learn some stuff, the problem is that I have no idea! I decided that I wanted to try learn about skinning-texuring. I want to use some ready made textures .jpeg files, whatever to retexture existing BIS models. The problem is that I have NO IDEA about it, i need some ready made tutorial or whatever you think it would help me. What tools do I need? Can I combine both Taki and US marine models? Thank you for your time.
PuFu 4600 Posted March 9, 2011 I need some things in order to learn some stuff, the problem is that I have no idea!I decided that I wanted to try learn about skinning-texuring. I want to use some ready made textures .jpeg files, whatever to retexture existing BIS models. The problem is that I have NO IDEA about it, i need some ready made tutorial or whatever you think it would help me. What tools do I need? Can I combine both Taki and US marine models? Thank you for your time. just a note: skinning != texturing. Software: 1. you will need to install BIS tools 2 2. you will need a professional grade software for picture manipulation (pixel based). Gimp is free the really basic of it - steps you will need to accomplish : a. grab the .paa file for the diffuse color (.ca/.co) for the model you want to retexture. b. modify it to your liking c. create new configs for your newly created units d. either hex-edit the texture path into the odol .p3d file (hex editing is tolerated around here as long as you use a model from a game and release an addon for the same game), or use hiddenSelection in the configs (where available). c. play with it what is the knowledge you need to grasp before hand: 1. the basics of pixel based software (plenty of tutorials for PS or Gimp around the web) 2. the basics of file extension and usage of textures files in BIS games (.paa file) and their coresponding extensions. (reading the biki texview manual should suffice) 3. the basics for replacement/new units configs that you'll need to create. best of luck. PS: I would have sent you to a tutorial, but there is not a single step by step tutorial on the subject afaik. PPS: Use the search function on those forums, a lot of the information is around here, unfortunately, wide spread around different threads
max power 21 Posted March 10, 2011 The important thing, I think, is to do tuts and also play around quite a bit. There's a lot to these photo manipulation software and learning all of it quickly is not really realistic. On the topic of blending modes or brushes alone there are many possibilities! It will take a while to acclimatize to them. In the meantime, you can sure play around and see what the blending modes do and that kind of thing. I learnt a lot by creating ridiculous scenes like taking my friends' heads out of photos and putting new ones on, or putting something in a scene and trying to make it look like it belongs there, or making a photo of a clean car look like a dirty car, that sort of thing. ziiip 1 Posted March 12, 2011 Isn't it going to be noticable on the edges of the images?

ziiip 1 Posted March 23, 2011 When a pattern "goes out" of the image, it has a sharp edge there and it looks really bad.
