You on modem and connect real slow?

Recommended Posts

Players can find after some time playing Operation Flashpoint online, suddenly they are taking 2 minutes to connect. Mostly this happens to modem players, but can also happen to those on ADSL or CABLE.. this must be very frustrating for them, as players already in the game yell for them to be kicked, because it appears their connection is too slow to play well anyway.

This is often incorrect, and good players who deserve a game are missing out. Their connections are viable, they just have something preventing timely connection. Hopefully some of this will help:

Possible causes for slowness:

Unneeded folders/files stored under the C:\Program Files\CodeMasters\ DIR.

There should only be the OFP directory under Codemasters, nothing else.

Under Codemasters\Operation Flashpoint\

BIN\

Campaigns\

DTA\

Missions\

MPMissions\

Users\

Now after some upgrades and sound addons like Satchell's, there are a few extra files in there. So do not go deleting things unless you are sure.

Basically the rule for the OFP Dir is this:

Any files stored under Codemasters\Operation Flashpoint\, ZIP etc, that are addons, upgrades, do not store them in the OFP directory, put them elsewhere. Even though it seems a logical place. Since OFP appears to scan its directory structure at many points in the game, you may find it slows down.

The ADDONS\ Dir

..should only contain the addons  you use most frequently. When OFP starts i think it must load and index every addon it has available in this directory. If you play online using only the official addons, remove the extra ones until you do use them, because you might be sacrificing speed performance for no reason.

Users\<PlayerName>\ Directory:

This directory is where all your custom made missions reside, as well as your custom faces.

Try and keep these clean, your missions are fine, but if you have a million .jpg's and .pbo's in this directory to use as custom faces then remove them to storage, and keep only the current face.jpg you are using. (Btw, yes, if you have a face.jpg in the proper ofp design and format in your player directory, you can have a custom face)

Once again I'd like to thank MINION for the excellent investigative work he has done into connection speed problems. This has given great insight into how OFP functions, which is a great help for modem users. I have not seen this sort of information anywhere so great work MIN biggrin.gif
