REQ: MLOD Head models from Operation Arrowhead

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if it would be possible for BIS to release an updated head model in MLOD format from Operation Arrowhead. As you can see in this pic, the head models from Operation Arrowhead are far more detailed and even with the same texture have much more personality and detail.

Why do we need new head MLODS

Within Task Force 86 we use custom head proxies for our members. These allow our members to have a unique appearance ingame as well as help in identifying members on the battlefield. These unique faces are made possible by using the bysta.p3d file (arma 2 head mlod) that was released with the Arma 2 sample model.

What is the advantage of using head proxies over glasses

Custom headgear can be added and changed on units using the glasses proxy. As Schnapsdrosel first did (I think) and what I used for the TF86 Seals, the glasses "proxy" as I will call it can be used to create headgear on a unit with no or very low profile headgear, thus changing the appearance without creating a thousand different variants of a model. The primary limitations of this method, however, are that 1.) When activating NVGs the glasses proxy is removed, therefore all headgear is removed at night and 2.) headgear needs to be made to fit around the existing head shape, which can sometimes cause clipping or other issues.

By moving over to a custom head proxy there are several advantages. First, NVGs no longer hide headgear. As seen in this screenshot, custom headgear remains intact when using NVGs without having to create a new model. All of the headgear seen in this screenshot is on a head proxy.

Custom head proxies can also be coded to be used on AI units, thus allowing a user to create unique appearances that can be spread across units, eliminating the need for a large number of units just for small headgear changes such as from a boonie to a helmet.

In conclusion, custom head proxies are something I think is vastly under utilized as far as units go and allow for uniqueness, individuality, and variety without having to make a wide range of models to meet everyone's preferences. BIS started this by using head proxies to change just a face, but I believe it can be taken further to allow for much more variety with much less work on the modders part. It would be great if we could get updated mlods that use the new, more detailed Operation Arrowhead faces.

Thanks,
