GBU-12 = laserguided bomb. You need someone equipped with a laser designator to designate the target.

unpractical ?

They are extremely deadly when someone else (AI or player) is using a laserdesignator.

What meant was there useless just by them self's, when no ones on the ground to mark targets.

just like in real life, they (A10s) are not a tool for lonewolves. It takes a team to utilize its full potential.

I would suggest your Arma2 use is unpractical ;)

If you want to use them and are working in the mission editor, if you add a forward air controller unit and group him to you, he'll use the laser on armoured targets

BTW, can you lock on to a laser target with the bomb selected? And which part of the hud is the targeting aid?

Yes, by cycling through pressing TAB or right clicking a target. Laser targets should appear as red on radar and should be the only targets lockable with LGBs selected.

Well i dont know about A10's but in "real life" F16's have the capability to manually designate the target through radar. They can carry alot of the same munitions.

The only bombs i know of that can lock are on the Su-25.

In this game, a skilled pilot and a forward air controller (FAC) can destroy virtually any target with a single GBU-12.

Lasing targets for others taught me how to properly pilot an A10.

Ironically it becomes incredibly boring for the pilot when a team gets proficient at laser marking targets. In a sense, thank god we don't have JDAMs... :p

The A10C can self-designate by using the Litening 2 pod. The ARMA2 A10 appears to be an A10A for some strange reason.

Probably to support the idea of using ground teams or other aircraft to designate...

I always assumed it was because it would involve attaching a turret to a fixed wing aircraft.

well it shouldn't be mutch more difficoult than putting it on a chopper? or the predator ( even if that doesn't work very well :p )

gbu's are best used in combined ops with grond forces, or aircraft with laser designators ( f.ex. the viper )

But alas radar cant lock for LGB's

Or if they wanted them to be self guided, they'd just allow for regular lock instead of just laser lock. Because they didn't means they probably want to keep it laser only for gameplay purposes.

yes, and it works, same way as the vipers, like a charm.

you can also use a laser designator to target hellfires

or the predator to target for gbu's ;)

haven't tried the target strobe thopugh, anyone else tried that?

would be very nice if you could use the target strobe(s ) for marking a target for a gbu run

Laser Designator is just about Standard with the US and their Aircraft. Same with the Brits

And don't forget the fact you can use that one sexy UH-1Y Venom.

You can aim GBUs with the hud. There is a small circle that is the path of the nose of the aircraft, extending from it is a line and a larger circle with a 'W' shaped symbol in it. That is the "dumb bomb" aiming reticle. Not very accurate though.
