Servers benchmark

Recommended Posts

I made chart that compare servers efficiency. If You want to participate, please dowload mission and run it for 10 MINS (dedicated server only!). Please post score ,server tech specs, running operating system and IP (at least: procesor type and speed, memory type and speed) in this topic. Please leave mission on server i'll come and validate score :)

link to chart http://www.mania.com.pl/graf.php

link to mission: download here

Test instructions:

- Start dedicated server (v. 1.57),

- join it from another PC,

- login as administrator,

- type #monitor,

- run mission,

- stay where u start, :)

- wait ~ 10 MINS,

- post lowest server fps score.

could you be a bit more specific on instructions? how to get score, do I need to stay connected for the whole time, were you running any mods? you also probably want to save server build for future reference and comparison on betas etc etc etc. Also might be a good idea to compare operating systems. I think there are too many "open" variables in this to be a good solid gathering on information in this form. There seems to also be some errors in your scripts:

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 Error in expression <cVM "briefing.sqf";

if(true) exitWith ();>

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 Error position: <);>

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 Error unexpected )

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 File mpmissions\__cur_mp.Chernarus\init.sqf, line 3

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 Error in expression <cVM "briefing.sqf";

if(true) exitWith ();>

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 Error position: <);>

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 Error unexpected )

2011/01/04, 1:16:04 File mpmissions\__cur_mp.Chernarus\init.sqf, line 3

its not exitwith () it's exitwith {} you need curlybrackets...

Finally testscores:

I've ran the test twice now both times 10 minutes

i7-930 @ 2.80GHz

8gb DDR3

I know it says i7-920 on that list but our server definitely has i7-930

OA server server: 1.57.76903

FPS: 7 on average

at the same time I was keeping an eye on the server and this process was using around 14.75% cpu on average while running the test while using on average 17 threads.

startupline was quite clean with only the following:

arma2oaserver.exe -profiles=xxx -config=xxx -port=xxx

will check on ours tonight... though ours is only a quad core lol.. and wont get close to your scores, still would be nice to check,,

Server is a Dell powerlege, Intel Xeon E5335 Quad @ 2.0Ghz, 4Gb ram, Server 2008 64bit service pack 2.

8 fps was the lowest with it being 9 for most of the test, no mods running

@ Sekra, Our server scored better than Yours and We both know how much faster Yours should be, maybe get them disable hyperthreading in the bios of that server and run it again. Ours only started 14 threads by the way, with 22-25% cpu usage (thrashed one core like the game normally does for ai calculations)

hmmm not sure if this is right because 95% of the test ours was on and 11 and 10 fps Rarely going below 11... with a drop down to 9 FPS twice on the whole test....

Using all four cores at around 33 %

Our lowly system :(

Q6600 2.40 GHz

4 gig of ram

Windows server 2003 enterprise edition. 64 bit

Only "MODS" were baf and Pmc

not sure if you need this info but we do use Firedaemon Trinity to run it as a service (doubt thats gonna make a diff though)

one thing I did was restart the server prior to test,,,, (not a full reboot though)

SERVER TAG

SBS - Special Boat Service

Here are details for "[HUD]Arma2" server

Core i7 875 running 4.1GHz (Hyper threading off)

8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram

Win7 64bit

average cpu use during session 29%

Lowest fps 20

ofc no mods on server.

Zeus server:

Intel Xeon X5570 @2.93 GHz (Hyperthreading on)

Windows 2008 Server 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, DDR3-1333

Lowest framerate as reported by the #monitor command: 14 fps

At the very start of the mission the first few monitor reports vary slightly, but it then settles at 14 fps and sits there for the duration of the test.

(PM sent with further details)

out of curiosity, what's FPS if you disable HyperThreading in BIOS ?

I'd love to try it, but unfortunately, BIOS access is not possible right now.

Two questions please:

1) What is the reason not to use a mission that logs the performance automatically

and uses calculations rather than AI for this?

2) What is the goal of this approach?

We want know what kind of cpu, ram, etc. is the best for Arma server.

We want know what kind of cpu, ram, etc. is the best for Arma server.

To be completely fair to this, we should be inputing cost of server also.... stands to reason that if you have enough money to throw at server you will get the best chip etc...........

What we should be looking at is the bigger picture, IS IT worth throwing loads of money at a server when you can get a system that can do the job reasonbly well without paying through the nose for it....

Soooooooooooo many choices :) obviously my system is cheaper than most of the others, BUT for what we use it for it pretty much "kicks Arse" (100% PvP without AI)

I could run 2 maybe 3 PvP 24 player servers on our system but choose to stick with the one 36, we could run with more players but that would not suit our choice of maps.... ....

Just stating that theres much more to choosing the right chip etc for running arma... ...

Taxman, that's the idea. When I gather few more setups, I will check and post their prices in $ and euro.

Just threw up a CO server on one of my boxes, actually the slower of the 2.

Have called it SBS - The longboat house , CO CTI server

q6600 2.4Ghz @ 3.02, at one point was quite happilly running multiple instances @ 3.6Ghz

4Gb Kingston DDRII-8500 @ 1008 5-5-5-18

Cheapish asus p5q-VM mATX mobo with G45 chipset

lowest i saw was 13, but i reckon with some tweaks i could improve that, had no cpu affinity set and really only saw the use of one core, i'll reinstall FD and set it up and can then give you the comparative results from 1,2,3 and 4 cores being available to the app/service.

which will also give a much better idea of what hardware is required, from past experience arma likes fast cores with plenty of mem bandwidth, hence OCing a cheaper cpu gives great results.

Esco

edit - OS is win2k8 enterprise

Updated, Escobar next benchmark will be focus on OC and OS systems I have MSDN AA license. So I try to test all MS systems and some Linux on Virtual machine.
