john_mcclane 0 Posted May 10, 2002 First of all, I'd like to mention that I am not a newbie, and I have been playing Flashpoint since the Euro release last year. I enjoy playing on public servers, but I'd like to vent about something that bugs me. The following is an example of what I am talking about... The other night I was playing on a popular public server. We were playing a coop mission. After completing one of the objectives, we were to drive back to the LZ to board choppers to proceed to the next objective. Everyone else loads into the truck they arrived in. I comandeer a civilian truck that no one had used or was going to use. As I am driving to the LZ, several people are freaking out that I am driving. They said that only squad leaders or certain people can drive, fly, etc. (sounds like they want to have all the fun). I'm sorry, but I'm not in a squad/clan. I was playing on a PUBLIC server. I don't see why I have to be bossed around and led by the hand like a mindless lemming. Besides, no one was going to use the truck and I am capable of looking after myself. If they don't want people to think for themselves, then they shouldn't be running a public server. Put a password on it and only let clan members have access if they want to play the leadership game. I just don't understand why anyone would want to play like that. Who wants to play a game online and be told what to do and how to play from total strangers. It's obviously a different story if you are only playing with fellow clan members on a private server. I appreciate all the great public servers that people are running. I just don't see why some individuals have to be so bossy and arrogant. I feel like some people need reminding that this is a game that we all play to have fun. Tactician 0 Posted May 10, 2002 Usually when I'm in this situation, I follow their instructions at least for a little bit to see if they're any good at commanding.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted May 10, 2002 I wouldnt get too bent out of shape about it. Try to put yourself in their shoes: they probably deal with all sorts of idiots showing up and wrecking vehicles and generally being jackasses, and so they institute that kind of rule. My advice would be, spend a significant amount of time on the server, become a regular, and you will find that they, like you, just want to have a good time. Remember, they dont know you, and you dont know them.
john_mcclane 0 Posted May 10, 2002 Just because someone is an admin, that shouldn't make them feel superior and that they have the right to boss everyone around. I've even been in a game where the admin was threatening to kick people from the server if they didn't do exactly as they were told to the letter. If someone is being a jackass and ruining the game for the others, then they can always be kicked from the game. But, if someone just wants to think for themselves and use their own tactics, why not let them? Sure, there are some lousy players out there that just want to cause havoc, destroy everything in sight, and be a general pain in the neck. The rest of us don't need to be automatically treated like children because of them.
Tom Gore 0 Posted May 10, 2002 In OFP you do exactly as your group leader tells you to do. If you don't want to follow orders, don't play OFP on public servers. On the other hand, if the group leaders orders constantly get the team killed, you might want to express that perhaps someone else should lead. Or change servers. Soloing players playing "by their own tactics" should stick to single player or go play Quake.
john_mcclane 0 Posted May 10, 2002 "In OFP you do exactly as your group leader tells you to do. If you don't want to follow orders, don't play OFP on public servers." ---- Do you realize how stupid and immature that sounds? I think you could use a reality check. This is a game. To be ordered around a virtual battlefield by total strangers is idiotic. If everyone is in a clan and wishes to play that way, that makes sense. Just don't try to tell people outside your squad what to do. Keep your orders in your own group. You make it sound like it's a rule written in stone that everyone does exactly as the "group leader" tells them. If people demand to play like that, do it on a private server with their squad/clan. Don't expect everyone on a PUBLIC server to listen and follow every order the so called leader barks out. "Soloing players playing by their own tactics should stick to single player or go play Quake." ---- Hmm... So someone that wants to think on their own and use their own tactics should go play a game of Quake that requires no thinking or tactics whatsoever. That makes about as much sense as the rest of your post.
hkg3 0 Posted May 10, 2002 I'm with you on that one John, i have not personally been told "Hey you can't fly/drive that chopper/truck/tank " etc, but if i was i would be a bit pissed off to say the least. As you say it's only a game and it should be treated that way, yeah maybe if the guy had said "Look i would rather we all went in the one truck bla bla", not "Hey you you can't drive that" erm and why not, BECAUSE U SAY SO??. If there was some form of plan or reason not to take the unused truk then fair enough stick to it, but who's to say that you didn't have a better plan etc etc ramble ramble, you get my drift........ When we play we never tell anyone that they can't do anything in the game, yeah we would prefer that we all stuck as a group etc. The only example i can give of us telling anyone not to take a vehicle is in a clan match where we might want to protect it to avoid giving away unnecessary points or something. Anyway feel free to click on the link below, join our forum and play at our server, where freedom to do what the f**k you like is greatly appreciated and expected. Blake 0 Posted May 10, 2002 If you are told to do things that are totally suicidal or foolish, you can always argue with the group leader and do as you feel best. But in co-op missions the co-operation is essential as well as chain of command. Believe me, I've been playing too many missions where single disobeying immature players screw the entire missions by going rambo, killing hostages, firing too early and ruining an ambush etc. Needless to say, rest of the group was very angry and apalled by this kind of reckless behaviour. In OFP greatest pleasure comes from co-operation and teamwork and if one doesn't like it they should play single-player missions or some shoot-em-up CTFs or TDMs.
Chris Death 0 Posted May 10, 2002 I'm with you McLane, same as my buddie HKG3. There's only one thing, i believe you misunderstood: If they are talking about squad-leaders, i think they don't mean the leaders of some MP-clan/squad, i'd rather think they are talking about the squad/group leader from the game engine ~S~ CD
john_mcclane 0 Posted May 10, 2002 I'd like to add that I don't have a problem with reasonable orders such as "hold fire until everyone is in position", etc. Just don't get so carried away that you start telling people precisely what they can and can't do. moerty 0 Posted May 12, 2002 best coop's are played with a squad, especially a few black op missions where the whole team has to infiltrate and set satchels and begin some organized chaos.
