The name of a community that I`ve passed through a few times

Recommended Posts

This isn`t a joke by the way:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Swastika_ON.JPG

And here`s a little excerpt from a wikipedia article about the name of the town:

"During World War II the provincial government sought to change the town's name to Winston in honour of Winston Churchill, but the town refused, insisting that the town had held the name long before the Nazis co-opted the swastika symbol (å). Residents of Swastika used to tell the story of how the Ontario Department of Highways would erect new signs on the roads at the edge of the town. At night the residents would tear these signs down and put up their own signs proclaiming the town to be "Swastika".[citation needed]

Christopher Macaulay, a direct descendant of Thomas Babington Macaulay, was instrumental in fighting to keep the name of the town unchanged despite the association with National Socialism.

Swastika has periodically been subject to derision for retaining the name. Local residents, however, have continued to resist a change."

Finland has places like Paskasuo (shit bog), Örkkiniitty (orc meadow), Hevonpersiinsaaret (horse's ass islands), Terskanperä (glans bottom), Viheltävän vitun aapa (whistling cunt's morass) and Pallivaha (ball wax).

Fucking starts to sound pretty tame, considering that it doesn't even mean the same in German.

Hi all

Not far from where I live in the village of Conisbrough near Doncaster, there used to be a "Butt Hole Road"

300px-Butt_Hole_Road.jpg

...Residents of Butt Hole Road were determined to have the name of the street changed to deter tourists from visiting the street and to put an end to the jokes made about the street's name. Planners allowed the change as all of the residents on the street were in favour of the new name. Because the Doncaster Council would only replace a street sign for free if it was damaged or in a state of disrepair, the residents of Butt Hole Road had to raise £300 for a new street sign. On 22 April 2009, the street was renamed to "Archers Way", named after the 930-year-old Conisbrough Castle, located half a mile (0.8 km) away. Shortly after the name change, an internet petition was created to change the road back to its original name. The renaming of the street gained worldwide attention and was featured in such international publications as The New Zealand Herald, Bild (Germany), and Het Laatste Nieuws (Belgium)...

Actually the reason the name was changed to archers is that the original meaning of the word "Butt" was the bottom of an old barrel which is what was commonly used as an Archers target and Butt Hole Road was the road to where people in Conisbrough, or more likely Burcroft the nearer village, used to practice their archery.

People used to have to practice their Archery as required by Law in England at the time; so the place where people use to set up all the old barrel butts for target practice became shortened from "Where the old Barrel Butts for archery practice are." to just "The Butts" often attached to that particular location or as in London there is a place called "Newington Butts" where a piece of land "abuts" two roads and this was shortened to the name of the place name plus Butts. And there are many other places in England with Butt as the street or location name.

Conisborough's main industry for hundreds of years has been stone quarying, it is hard to walk 10 yards in Conisborough without being stood on or in old quarry workings; in this case I am presuming an archery Butt was set up in an Old Quarry so that there was less chance of a stray arrow hitting someone behind the target. So the road to a Hole in the ground where the archery targets were became: "Butt Hole Road."

But even this pales in to insignificance besides Oxford's:-

Gropecunt Lane (pronounced /ˈɡroʊpkʌnt ˈleɪn/) was a street name found in English towns and cities during the Middle Ages, believed to be a reference to the prostitution centred on those areas; it was normal practice for a medieval street name to reflect the street's function or the economic activity taking place within it. Gropecunt, the earliest known use of which is in about 1230, appears to have been derived as a compound of the words grope and cunt.[1] Streets with that name were often in the busiest parts of medieval towns and cities, and at least one appears to have been an important thoroughfare...

In line with the other underworldly towns mentioned in this thread; I fly to Vantaa (Helsinki) Airport quite frequently, and always find it rather amusing to type in the 3-letter destination code at the airport's auto check-in machines.

Please state your destination

(While it misses an "l" for correct English spelling, it works out in Dutch)

Well, working one's way into central from that airport without a taxi can be considered as hell.

lol...I know you yanks will love this - kinda like Walkers "Butt Hole.." (lmao)...

I grew up in a village called Butt Lane. Famous for being the birthplace of one Reginald J Mitchel - (his old house has been a funeral parlour for as long as I can remember)...

...plenty of speculation why it's called Butt Lane, only reasonable explaination is a reference to archery targets, which were knows as "butts". But, (no pun), it was only untill I landed on the internet and mentioned this to an American for the first time I realised I'd grown up in a town whose name is synonomous with "Arse Street".

Michigan wins nub:

Hell

Paradise

:yay:

In the southern Black Forest there's a valley called Höllental ('Hell's Valley') - and guess what the village at the valleys exit is called? Right: Himmelreich ('Heaven'). Names like these aren't really uncommon - Wikipedia lists for Germany alone 7 more villages (and four mountains) with the same name...

With how uber Christian America is I find it to be hilarious that there is a Hell, MI.

No list like this could ever be complete without mention of Wanker's Corner in Oregon.

MI gets pretty damn cold. I was there once in late February & it was brass monkey weather, with snowdrifts, ic, temp -5 to -8C at midday. So it's pretty likely Hell [MI] freezes over.

Good luck with the favours!

I heard that the reason for many dirty names in Finland is that the russians (during the ru era) mapped all Finland (atleast this goes for the coastal region with all the islands) and as the locals didnt always like the russians + a sense of humor they came up with dirty words that the russians didnt understand. In the swedish region of the archipelago you can find "fittskär" (pussy-island), "pungö" (ballsack-island) and other dirty names :D

There's also Condom, though it's way more tame than the other town names posted in this thread.

And about that "Fucking" town (note that I'm using "fucking" as a noun, not an adjective), I found this to be quite amusing in the wikipedia article:

The lower sign — which features an illustration of two children — is meant to advise drivers to watch their speed, but tourists see this as a double meaning coupled with the village name.

hehe...

Hah great thread.

In the Netherlands the most famous town name is "Sexbierum" I think. Having both Sex and bier (=beer) in one name ;)

And I agree: The finns win by far :P
