Aculaud 0 Posted May 5, 2002 Iv been trying out some anti-air tactics for infantry in the mission editer. We all know that AA rockets are useless against enemy air power, unless we have a few guys carrying them, right? Well, i was trying to shoot down an Mi-24 hind with a LAW rocket, and this puzzles me. In the air, you have to hit it twice, but on the ground one shot is more than enough. Anyone else find this weird? Why would being in the air make a difference? FetishFool 0 Posted May 5, 2002 It's OPF's physics, I guess. No vehicle is designed to be tougher in one instance over another.
Espectro (DayZ) 0 Posted May 5, 2002 Well, actually... .. When an object is close on ground and an explosion occurs... the pressure will be redirected from ground onto the object again causing more damage. This is also called indirect damage, which IS modelled in OFP. If its correct modelled i can only guess.... but i doubt it.
FetishFool 0 Posted May 5, 2002 That makes sense. So basically, it's OPF's physics that cause the Hinds to blow up better while on ground.
LordZach 0 Posted May 5, 2002 ususally if you hit the bugger right he will turn upside down or go flying to the side and crash
Aculaud 0 Posted May 6, 2002 yeah, you can disorient them really well with a LAW rocket, but i was just disapointed cause you wouldnt get credit for the kill.
Grey Fox 0 Posted May 6, 2002 I just thought of something! Do you think any of our AA launchers (changed to realistic killing ability) could do an airburst. Like haveing a timer or something like that set for 7 seconds default and adjustable in the action menu. Or instead of an AA launcher a regular RPG NH75(not the RPG-7 since we don't have it ) Hey we could have that and put it on the Resistance side. I just realized I'm hurtilng my brain cells so I'll be back later to see replies.
dayglow 2 Posted May 6, 2002 I've shot down a Hind with one LAW. In Montique must fall I shot that bugger down hella good, but in the next mission where I"m lost in the woods, it was still there buzzing around COLINMAN
Major Fubar 0 Posted May 6, 2002 Same here DayGlow. Actually I know a few people who've done this, and all were a little P.O.'d the chopper was back next mission!
LordZach 0 Posted May 6, 2002 if it pisses you off that bad you can always add so when mr hind isn't around for the next mission it goes to end3 or something and for next mission on end3 delete mr hind add more patrols or something to make up for it. hell when i played i was able to run to the whole thing after gunning down a few squads. USSoldier11B 0 Posted May 6, 2002 Yeah. I found that shooting it in the aft section right at the base of the tail boom causes it to spin out of control and crash. Ever managed to hit one with Kegety's javelin?
Lazarus_Long 0 Posted May 6, 2002 A single LAW rocket will do it as long as you manage to take out the pilot with it. Structuraly the helicopter will still be flyable, but without a pilot, well....so long sucker! I've actually taken down a hind with a well placed sniper shot. It takes some patience but it is very possible. Those canopys are not bullet-proof.
LordZach 0 Posted May 6, 2002 i've shot them straight in the head when they were on the ground and it didn't go through the glass, i seem to be the only one who can't do this
Enigma 1 Posted May 6, 2002 heh. i was playing MP, on the map where u can buy things. we had about 100000 jeeps heh and a hind came he totally wiped everything out. then it came out of the forest and i was waiting with a carl gustav i shot it and it flipped and bam! I've sat point blank on a hind with a .50 MG, cut loose about 3 metres from the pilots head, and, jack shit! He wouldn't die until the whole chopper blew. Unless this is something that's changed in 1.46.... EDIT: I tried it out in the mission editor, first with an M21 then with FlipeR's M82A1. No effect, a full mag in each case... LordZach 0 Posted May 6, 2002 no fubar, i have 1.46 and have tried that too.
vo0do0 0 Posted May 6, 2002 I've never seen a Hind not go down in one LAW...like I always say "Luck is my best skill."
Hasha 2 Posted May 7, 2002 How the hell did you snipe the hind pilot??? Is the glass made of diamond or what? The Apache glass is SUGAR!! One shot from the side the pilot goes bye bye!

Warin 0 Posted May 7, 2002 I cant remember the name of the Red Hammer mission where the two Chinook helicopters come in on the town and you have to shoot them down... I ran out...and as the first Chinook came over I popped it with an AA missile..and took it out. I just about leapt out of my chair in joy...untill the damn thing fell out of the sky right on top of me. Wahahahaha. I laughed so hard I almost cried. LANDWARRIOR 0 Posted May 9, 2002 See what I have always did since I am a really good sniper in the game and a good hunter in real life, and everyone knows a good sniper knows his bullet point and the angle it should be shot at. I have only once not shot down any chopper I wanted too with a m21 and always get them damn hinds with one lawq and guess how?? I am good with angles so as soon as I hear one I spin around pull out my m21/law and with the law I shoot it straight in its tail everytime about midways in it it causes it to turn verticle and fly straight into the ground with the m21 I just use my angles take 3 seconds to aim and pull the trigger and watch him fall out of the sky. Also something I've noticced is that sometimes the front shield of the cockpit is bullet proof, but the side never has been, I've noticed just wait for them to get to a sideways position and shoot them that way guranteed not too miss if your good. Major Fubar 0 Posted May 9, 2002 Doesn't matter how good you are, in the OFP game engine, the Hind MI-24 cockpit is completely bulletproof, from all angles. None of the other chopper are like this. I think most people who think they have taken down a Hind pilot with small arms fire are thinking of an MI-17. But yes, if you hit a Hind with a LAW just right you can bring it to earth with one shot.
Lazarus_Long 0 Posted May 12, 2002 Hmmm.... I played around with the editor and discovered what some of you already knew: The Hind cockpit is indeed bullet proof. The Mi-17 is bullet proof also, but all the american helicopters are all vulnerable. The soviets must have some secret super plexi-glass or something. Pretty cheesy! I could have swore that I've sniped Hind pilots before. Maybe it was possible in an earlier version? Perhaps I'm just going senile.
eyes 0 Posted May 12, 2002 I seem to remeber bis saying something about real hind cockpits being bullet proof ages ago. I did some testing back then and I think if you unload three or four clips of and ak into the same windscreen from point blank range it eventually cracks and breaks so you can kill the pilot. The chances of you managing that when one is flying around trying to kill you are tiny, especially as your ai rarely attack choppers. And whilst on the subject have you tried the oh58 addon pack? The best addon i've played yet, good sounds, weapons and high quality - could almost be a bis addon. The machinegun and rocket version is the best (thats the kind of gun that should be side mounted on choppers rather than the slow mg we currently have). THe stingers are also very good too.
