Clutter wont work!

Im a newb and am attempting to master the configs and basics of visitor before getting down and dirty with a big project.

First problem is clutter

Let's try something about probability in here:

probability[]={0.09,0.09,0.9,0.9,0.999};

I believe the sum up must be = 1.

So let's try something like :

probability[]={0.05,0.05,0.1,0.1,0.7};

Note : I will add that choosing CA for being addons source, you forbid your self 3rd party addons use.

So ive ammended the clutterprobability no go..

Anything else glaringly wrong with my config?

Im just trying to learn configs first before diving into making a full blown map, so i will add other mods etc later when i get down to business.

Hmmm...

Absolutely sure you amended all the probabilities to total 1.0, or preferably slightly under, just like Old Bear suggested?

Thats by far the most obvious clutter-related issue I can see...

I can see a couple of other bits you could maybe try changing...

- starting from the top of your config...

Try changing this line...

fileName = "Bamian.pbo";

To this...

fileName = "Map_Bamian.pbo";

... same as the classname...

remove the "\" from the beginning of both these paths...

worldName= "\Bamian\Bamian\Bamian.wrp";

pictureShot = "\Bamian\Bamian\icons\BmBanner.paa";

plus - you should change that "Bamian.wrp" to "Map_Bamian.wrp" while you're at it...

At this point its just occured to me that I think that the name of the overall project folder ALSO has to be the same name as the .wrp/.pew, etc etc - so you might want to change the name of the project folder itself to "Map_Bamian", then amend both these and ALL OTHER PATHS EVERYWHERE IN YOUR PROJECT - INCLUDING RVMATS to reflect that change...

including the ones above so they're...

worldName= "Bamian\Map_Bamian\Map_Bamian.wrp";

pictureShot = "Bamian\Map_Bamian\icons\BmBanner.paa";

and remember to save the .wrp as that filename when you export it from Visitor...

Take the "\" off this path too... plus you'll be changing that project folder name...

... down at the clutter section, your first definition inherits from the default...

class Bm_GrassGeneral : DefaultClutter

but subsequent ones inherit from "Bm_GrassGeneral"

... make them all the same as the first one - inheriting from "DefaultClutter"

... further down - this bit...

#include "BamianNames.hpp"

once again - make this "Map_Bamian.hpp" - its autogenerated using the same name as the .pew (which should also be Map_Bamian.pew, by the way), when you add locations in Visitor...

Give that lot a try - specially the clutter inheriting thing... let us know how you get on...

So i took your advice, but called the it Bamian instead od MAP_Bamian, that way less needed changing. Still no go, the above is my new revised config, i note that i get butterflies etc, probably inherited from UTES.

Is their a "plants" required addon im missing? im really stuck.

This probability still totals 2.48 - it has to total 1 or preferably slightly less, like 0.99 or something...

sorry, it mustve reverted with all my cut and pastings from various configs i have backed up. it now reads probability[]={0.09,0.09,0.09,0.09,0.5}; and still no go. i Havent done anything in visitor yet, just imported heightfield, set up satellite grid, imported sat mask and texture mask, bulldozed, and saved as pew and exported as wrp. i then binarised the folder with binpbo, no config errors, ( ive had many in my trial and error) in game the textures and everything work, wondering if theirs something ive missed?

So it seems to be all about paths to clutters ...

But do a new check :

-you have visitor3 for ArmA2 and BinPbo from a fresh install,

-you are using the same version for ArmA2.exe and Buldozer.exe

-you have built your CA on P:

-you have built you own working space on P: [same level as CA]

-you have built your ca in your working space

-you have built your project directory in your project space [same level as ca]

-you have built Source and Data sub directories inside your project directory as well as your project .cpp, and your .wrp is saved at the same level.

thanks, im away for a week, so i will completely reinstall and set everything up from scratch incase i missed something, It looks like im missiing the Bamian\Ca\ folder with all the Cpp files....

and my bulldozer exe is out of date.

Okay im back, is their a batch way to unbin all the configs in P:\>CA\ ive unpbo all the relevant Arma2 files.. and theres lots of config bins in the buildings and structures

Additionally where would i put the expansions files? ( in know about the version confilcts )

Hi...

OK - looks like still a few things going wrong..

Cannot load font core\data\fonts\lucidaconsoleb8

Fonts file \core\data\fonts\lucidaConsoleB8 not found

and all the other "fonts" errors - have you unpacked the "BIN", "Core" and "languagecore" .pbo's to your P:\root ? - that should fix those errors...

...see this thread for discussion on that bit...

All the weather/lighting/thunder/sounds etc errors are there 'cause the definitions are missing in your config... I'll get back to that point later, but they shouldn't affect clutter...

Bad case in bamian\bamian\data\Bmmiddle_mco.paa

W:\c\Poseidon\Lib\txtBank.cpp(377) : Bad case in texture name

This means exactly what it says... theres an uppercase "B" in the texture name - thats Bad - hence "bad case"... Dunno why, but it's best to only use lowercase letters in ALL texture filenames...

path looks ok - is the model actually there???

on to your config...

This path and your actual folder structure in your screenshots don't agree...

... and thats the only obvious errors I can see so far... none of which should interfere with clutter I don't think...

Maybe theres a problem in your Layers.cfg...

As far as the weather stuff, etc is concerned - take a look at the Utes config, or, theres a "demo" island source files pack HERE you could take a look at... that's not really meant to be a tutorial island or anything - it was just a demo I did once of the Falklands to demonstrate just how big a 40x40km island was... however, it did have a basic sand/grass/rock 3-way layers, surfaces and clutter setup - which works... theres a config.cpp too - it might be worthwhile taking a look at that... it's pretty basic and not exactly a classic textbook example, but its all working... I think... ;)

So I'd suggest fixing the stuff I spotted above, plus maybe take a look at the Utes config and/or that Falklands one - see about weather, etc, plus maybe post your layers.cfg here just in case theres an obvious flaw in it - don't think we've seen that file yet......

If you copy stuff out of the Falklands files, or even just adapt them to suit yourself (feel free to do so, by the way) - remember to retag ALL the "Bush_etc, etc" tagged stuff - files, classes - everything!

Okay last night i changed a few things, i went to project preferences and set config class name to "World" previously was empty

and i also PBOd P:\bamian instead of P:\Bamian\Bamian, and this is my binpbo log this morning ( I deleted a shedload of error2s... )

As it says... binmake program may not be properly installed... inside the "Bin Tools 2" folder.

Have you checked all the stuff dealing with Folder Structure ???

It is a bit frustrating at the beginning, while you learn the basics about how all these things work... I spent about 20 days trying to catch up with all this technical stuff to get everything running fine... my island yet looks fine, my textures including color map are worth looking and -till now- I can turn on the automatic pilot for pretty safe landings at the airport... :)

By now I will have to ponder seriously which is the best array of tex/clutters for my mask... a lot of work ahead I guess...

Binmake is clearly there, i think its an error for pre binarized files ive poached. in your Project preferences, what is the config class name youve used?

The file should be named "config.cpp" - not CfgWorlds... just in case...

Drop the "\" on these three paths...

My config works just fine with the \'s in front of them. :confused:

BTW, what is the difference between using class Utes: CAWorld versus class CAWorld : DefaultWorld

This part of CfgWorlds in the config has me the most confused still.

it must be my workspace, some sources only have buildings2 etc, yet some sources say extract ALL pbos in your addons folder, including non object related anims, vehicles, etc

my layers may be a problem..... my materials mask is white black and green, but the tiled layers files show black green and RED??

when i pinpbo, the temp folder has various ca\plants2\clutter\data\ rvmats and paas. so it is being processed somewhere.

can bush or oldbear send me a pic of there workspace folder to confirm?

if that doesnt work, i need someones elses project and .pew then reimport sat and tex masks. to recombine layers, if i use someone elses project and clutter works, then i know its my config.

Don't worry about what the generated layers look like - as long as the colours on your mask match the RGB values stated in your layers.cfg...

It wasn't really ever meant as a tutorial terrain, but I seem to be suggesting looking at my Falklands Islands source files a lot recently - get them HERE and take a look... This wasn't really meant to be looked at too closely, - it was just a scale test as part of a discussion, but theres a working config, clutter, surfaces, layers... a mask & sat and heightfield and .pbl (I think)... just the necessary files... However - put together - they do work (you can get the working .pbo at that link too)...

How did you come to get those fine nopx files...??? these ones don't look like any other normal map i have done yet using software pieces like xNormal or nDO on PS, normalmap plugin for gimp or CrazyBump... and still can make it work as expected...

I have an extinguished volcano on Easter Island and actually I am stuck on a sort of lava rocks ground where I can not take away the false "bumpiness" of this ground, sometimes it's too bright to be a ground or too flat as a mosaic like ground... I did not manipulate RVMAT at all, I am using a default terrain one...

Since I am not satisfied with the results I would like to listen to you on how to get there when dealing with normals... I read that you use PS Nvidia Plug-ins for that job ... is it that important to obtain good results ???

I own a nice NV GPU card but i haven't found any standalone sotware from Nvidia to build my terrain textures...

I already check out Beton's tutorial for GIMP and NormalMap plugin and it does not work as well as expected because 3D preview is not working for me... Do you know of some tutorial on making proper Normal Maps for terrain that you may recommend???

Yeah - the exact details of .nopx is missing from Betons otherwise excellent ground textures tutorial...

It's pretty straightforward - the .nopx is just a .nohq with a "heightfield" or "displacement map" in its alpha channel...

You can use a greyscale of the _co texture as a displacement map, or the CrazyBump demo will make them, or you could check out PixPlant - CrazyBump without the hype...
