The best flightsim these days!

Recommended Posts

Satchel:

Little inside to F5. They just bought a bunch of computers for the Grapevine Texas office or maybe shipping to Colorado I don't know. They buy computers from the same place as I do and one of the guys keeps me up to date whenever Cavanaugh comes in. So anyhow I guess they are only just now getting started on F5.

Dayglow:

F4SP2 Yea they are spending too much time on the bells and whistles and not enough time on the real problems. I put it on the shelf in hopes that SP3 will be flyable. In MP that is.

As far as flight simming OFP...NOT! It's cool but there is not a chopper in the world that can do 300 knots and I do it regularly in OFP. Comming off a flight sim were the attention to detail is so high in F4 in regard to flight dynamics the flight model in OFP is a little hard to swallow. But as far as the abilty to fly and fight in OFP it's very cool. Without it and some of the other similiar capabilities (tanks, cars etcc.) OFP would be "just another..." .

Wrong, the speed in OFP is measured in km/h not in knots, and the altitude in meters, not feet, so the speed of the choppers it's pretty accurate.

The aircraft simulation in OFP isn't the best, but I've been waiting for a game where you can fly, get shot down and run around with an assault rifle for a long time, and BIS finally delivered.

Amazingly enough the only other game I've ever played that let me do anything like it was Corncob 3d:

Ah my 486 days smile.gif. That was a fun game, I enjoyed shooting up alien vehicles with my pistol after ejecting, being able to call an ambulance, if close enough walk to my airbase and get into a new plane, ect.

Didn't the Interloop flight sim, JTF, let you run around with a pistol after you ejected?

Yes. It also had fantastic tree coverage if you flew low.

That's the sea we need in OFP tounge.gif

A-10_down_low1.jpg

That A-10 looks like OFP A-10. smile.gif

All in all. Lock On seems to be one good flight simulator.

Anyways. I think that OFP flying is the best. There is no real fun in flight simulators. It's just for learning. OFP aircrafts are designed for real action. I'm having fun in OFP. Flight simulators are boring.

It's an older one and has a really good terrain engine. I was never able to try it either b/c I was flying my 486 when it came out. I was stuck many years playing Falcon3,Tornado and Fleet Defender on that box before I got my current one. Guess I could have had it worse smile.gif

The engine is actually used in the game Project Im Going In. Guess it's the first flight-sim engine used for a FPS.

Days are over where serious simulations were grey and  visually unattractive, some flightsims feature nearly as good terrain and ground unit graphics as some games taking place exclusively on the ground.

Todays hardware enables simulation designers to bring quite an amount of realism into their flightsims, both technically and visually.

Here a few shots of an A-10 i´m currently retexturing for FS2002, the possible texture formats in FS2002 allow for quite photorealistic end results:

Just need an instrument panel for it, currently it uses one of an airbus biggrin.gif.

I used to like EECH, but now I realize that I hate it mad.gif

The weapon statistics are WAY too unrealistic! I can get within 1 kilometer or so of a hind with my Comanche, fire off a stinger, and have the hind fire off a single flare which makes my missile miss. Its bull, missiles should be WAY more accurate, especially these high-quality ones such as Stingers, AMRAAMs, AA-11s, etc.

And I hate how tanks fight! They have like these long-range artillery duels from BVR, and just chuck rounds back and forth.

And ships are WAY too vulnerable, due to the crappy-missile guidance thing I mentioned.

And why is it that in campaigns, SAMs outnumber tanks by like 10:1? Like an army might have 112 Tunguskas in a campaign, and have maybe 20 T-80U's. ITS MADNESS I SAY!

*cries*

You can adjust the effectiveness of flares you know. It's a command line thing and should be in the back of your manual.

Also go to the page I mentioned back earlier in this thread. It has a new exe that changes a lot in the ground war and there is a lot of new campaigns on the screen as well.

Also the simhq board will help you tweak the game to your liking. Just go to www.simhq.com.

Sweet, those are most of the games I used to play on my 486 smile.gif. Now that I think about it, Corncob was truly amazing. You could survive crash landings depending on speed, you could control your aircraft by remote control after ejecting, you had a satchel charge with you in case you had to eject and still hadn't destroyed the main hardened target your pistol couldn't take care off. Heck I remember in some missions, the objective was to ram your plane into an alien structure, ejecting just before impact and then fight your way out on foot! Sometimes I didn't manage to eject in time and flew into the structure, and I still survived in the mangled wreck of the plane. Nothing like getting out of a twisted mess of a plane and shooting at the hordes of incoming aliens smile.gif.

The best simulator that I have and my favorite is USAF. I think OFP is a crappy flight sim but you can do most things in both games like having ground forces designate targets. I liike flying sometimes in ofp especially kegetys new Hawk. I'd like to see him develop some more planes.

Well USAF isn't that far off of OFP tounge.gif . Just kidding. I never got into that sim. Picked it up for $10, but the controls just felt mushy and it was like the planes were moving through water, just didn't have snap ya know? I loved ATF/NATO fighters on my 486 so when I got the new box I thought this was the conitunation of that grand series, just didn't feel right to me. Would like to try the new patches to see if they do anything, but now I've got xp on my box, so it doesn't work, rats.

Tornado was a great flightsim! Way ahead of its time! It was although the first sim that made me think about how nice it would be to controll all the units. I think I could still live with a simulation with bad graphics like in tornado but with all units realistic moddelt and playable. The campaign map was verry nice too...

I liked the DID stuff alot. Especialy with the dynamical campaigns, man did i waste hours on those sims.

At the moment IL and CFS2.

Yeah, an updated Tornado would be nice, though when I think about it I spend very little time actually flying. Most of the time was under terrain following and doing the navigator stuff.

I bought IL-2 and it is a very nice sim, but it re-enforces the same thing when I got WWII fighters and Pacific Air War: I'm no good at prop sims biggrin.gif It's hard for me to get into. I can fly and fight all day in a jet, manage my energy in a knife fight, but in a prop I loose all skill sad.gif I stall, I spin, I can't hit anything. I've gone a long tiime in Il-2 without a kill. I slow things right down to 1/4 speed even and zoom in through the gun sight and I can never get the plane smooth, there is always a wobble and with the hitboxes in the game, I shoot most of my ammo into the air. I downloaded some training tracks and watch another guy and his gunnery. How does he fly so smooth? Man I need a heatseeker then all this persision flying don't matter smile.gif

I'm still a big fan of LB2. Now all I need is a voodoo-card so I can get rid of the smoke-lines (D3D-wrapper-issue) confused.gif

I wonder how the controls are in VBS1. If they are more reallistic, then I hope BIS are planning on copying it over to OFP. They could make it an option to choose between arcade and sim-controls (like they did with the "super-AI").

I can adjust the sensitivity and deadzones on my HOTAS Cougar, but I can't do anything with the issue of the turning-radius when flying high-speed with the choppers sad.gif

As soon as a chopper reaches 80+ km/h it starts handling like a car mad.gif

I guess VBS-1 is used to train tactical decision making, rather than simulating vehicle controls or absolut unit realism, at least judging from an UH-60 cockpit shot that was once on the VBS site, same cockpit as we have it.
