how do you use rangefinder/laser designator

So iam on mission 4 of baf dlc and ive got airsupport and arty support says arti support is a laser designator round.

It gives you a rangefinder and batterys yet cant load batterys or turn the laser on.

I can still use the arti but be nice know how to actully work the designator cheers.

While iam at it any one got any tips get soldiers out of combat mode.Seems like if they detect 1 soldier still in the area even if he's 1000s of metres away they wont come out of it.
