bwc153 10 Posted August 29, 2010 One of the guys i used to play with said he always put it on 'max' for immersion. Funny thing is, your brain filters out a majorty of the 'head bob', although it would be different for everyone. (For me, 15-20% looks 'right' for how i normally run while weighed down in RL anyways)
Devil Dogs SF 13 Posted August 29, 2010 20-25% for me, used to have it on 50% and wondered why my head felt weird after a couple minutes play time.
metalcraze 290 Posted August 29, 2010 I have my head bob at ~30% Deadzone at ~80% Actually I think BIS needs to enforce headbob not going lower than ~20% because otherwise players can easily see stuff far away while running which is cheating
Alex72 1 Posted August 29, 2010 25% awesome feature. Otherwise its head glued on stick. :)
polar bear 10 Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) Actually I think BIS needs to enforce headbob not going lower than ~20% because otherwise players can easily see stuff far away while running which is cheating A better solution than introducing the horrendously unrealistic head bob, which no-one ever experiences in real life due to the human brain's highly adapted perception filtering, would be to have different view distances for running, walking, standing, and crouching. That way you would simulate the realistic limits on vision while running, without having to introduce something unrealistic like head bob. If it could be done (dunno if it could with the current engine) blur everything slightly while running rather than simply reduce view distance. THAT would realistically simulate what I actually perceive when I'm running in real life. Things do not bob around but they do become blurred. stk2008 14 Posted August 29, 2010 When I see others use it it looks very very good makes the game so much better. But sadly no matter how low I have it (other than off) makes me feel ill so I have to have it off :(. Shame but there ya go.

That will look silly. Just like when you "hold breath" and suddenly it's 2x magnification even without looking through optics. But that can be forgiven as human can concentrate on stuff far away which can't be achieved with a monitor. But not when you run. When you run your head moves much in the same way as with headbob and you can't really distinguish anything 100 away apart from vague forms. 30% headbob simulates this perfectly while not causing nausea. polar bear 10 Posted August 29, 2010 When you run your head moves much in the same way as with headbob I beg to differ: You aren't giving sufficient credit to the brain's highly adapted perceptual system. When I run I'm able to maintain focus on a stable image. I can even run while shaking my head around and maintain stable focus. Yes, my head's moving around, and bobbing, and weaving, but the motions are predicted properly by my brain, and it compensates giving me the illusion of a relatively stable image. Head bob is unrealistic, it distorts the image in a way that is NOT what we perceive in real life. It just isn't. Try running and look at something, just try: The image will appear relatively stable to you even though you will simultaneously be aware that it's bobbing up and down. Ignoring the brain's ability to compensate and pretending that bob is what people see--unrealistic, and unrealistic in a way that ruins the game.
Grizzle 0 Posted August 29, 2010 In other news, I'm goddamn awesome. Thanks for the confirmation of a long held suspicion. Though I must admit, I thought you might merely be freakin awesome, but goddamn awesome? Next level, so next level.
frederf 0 Posted August 29, 2010 I have it on minimal setting. As for "there's no head bob in real life" try wearing 40+ lbs or gear, tired, and running. It's real.
bravo 6 0 Posted August 29, 2010 I use: headBob=0.06902986; Edit: its just me, or can't anyone be more specific in the request?
Dead3yez 0 Posted August 29, 2010 I have it on a lowish setting. Doesn't feel right without it, as far as immersion goes.
Beagle 684 Posted August 29, 2010 I use: headBob=0.06902986; Edit: its just me, or can't anyone be more specific in the request? I use 0.12000001 This setting seems to even soften the still happening head movement at 0.0000000 a bit. Like it even better as off from a more comforting aspect. =wfl= sgt bilko 10 Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) ... Just like when you "hold breath" and suddenly it's 2x magnification even without looking through optics... This happens only because two different actions are both bound to same key. "Hold breath" is for short time steady of aim with the backdraw that you start to choke after a while unless you breath which will have your aim all over the place. "zoom" in is supposed to emulate focusing on specific area with the backdraw of losing FOV. These can be re-mapped to different keys. CarlGustaffa 4 Posted August 30, 2010 I beg to differ: You aren't giving sufficient credit to the brain's highly adapted perceptual system. When I run I'm able to maintain focus on a stable image. I can even run while shaking my head around and maintain stable focus. Wrong. The brain will only compensate for so much. Running or sprinting will cause compensation to drop off considerably compared to if you were only walking. When you spot something while running, you're pretty much forced to stop to identify it (friend or foe). This is basically why I don't play PvP games. My opponent will use "any trick in the book" (no headbob, no post processing, use crosshairs instead of sights, no camera shake etc etc) to beat me, while myself only want the most immersion I can get. If I turn all this off, I feel like I'm playing CoD but with Arma weapons, and the fun factor is down the drain. So especially for PvP, it's not only about my own settings, but also those of my opponent, that create the odds in a fight. So if I'm gonna loose because I want the immersion, then PvP is not the place for me...
polar bear 10 Posted August 30, 2010 (edited) Running or sprinting will cause compensation to drop off considerably compared to if you were only walking. I have run in marathons and I have never, ever experienced any sensation like what "head bob" in the game produces. I get sweat in my eyes. Things blur. I'm conscious of moving up and down, but at the same time my attention is able to fix firmly on a specific point and not lose track of its position the way head bob in game causes. I may not be able to focus on it clearly for a variety of reasons but that is VERY DIFFERENT than not being able to accurately keep track of its position in space. Head bob fails to replicating what actually happens when you run to such an extent that it adds an air of complete artificiality to the game. Yes there are lots of distortions that occur in your vision when you run, but sorry the effect represented in the game just isn't one of them. I think it's worth having a visual effect that interferes with vision when running--it might be reducing the resolution, or introducing motion blur, or reducing lod, or reducing viewing distance, or all of the above, or something else--but it's not head bob.
