Dont laugh - mission trouble

Recommended Posts

Background

OK, ive had the game about a few days after getting it on a friends suggestion, and im slowly getting used to the controls and style, cos im a typical online fps gamer. My main game being Day of Defeat.

Problem Im not that far into the game, and the mission im getting stuck on is the one when ur evacuating Everon. The squad is heading back to Morton in a convoy. About 2 miles down the road and abut a mile outside Morton, u have to pull off the road and investigate a farm. U and Alpha squad come under attack. Now despite my best efforts the truck always gets destored, and so we have to advance to the farm house.

Part A If i follow the commander and flank along the forest, most of the guys in the open always get killed. If i flank ahead, and try to take them out before they kill my squad i tend to get killed. If i hang back and pick people off, EVERYONE tends to get killed.

Is there any workable tactic other than trying to flank the fighters, taking them out along the side of the forest?

Part B If i and a reasonable amount of guys (3-5) survive the first attack, we head off through the forest to Morton. On the other side of the trees, we're attacked once again, by machine gunners. Now ive made a few sucessfull attempts to provide covery fire for my squad from a small hill to the right of the second attack, but most of the time, my squad still gets killed fighting a T72 before i can get back to them.

Any advice?

Part C If i and my squad survive the above we move onto the outskirts of a forest that overlooks Morton. Its decided that we'll try and cross the road to the other side, while i provide cover. But i never survive more than 2 minutes, and my sqaud is always wiped out trying to cross the road.

I tend to pick up an AK47 or a PK to provide cover as they are more effective than the M16 i reckon. Ammo is not a problem, and neither is aiming tounge.gif its just numbers of enemies. I can never out flank them, or im snipered from a long way off. sad.gif

Hope i didnt bore u too much with being so long winded.

While going through the woods, Papa bear (HQ) says that Morton is overrun and that a new evac zone is set up at Ea64. When you get this message, forget everything about the squad and find a safe way over the road to the evac zone. There's no way you can save them anyway, their death is scripted to kick in when crossing the road (it's quite funny to see 8 guys suddenly die for no reason when there's no enemy in sight). Just get to Ea64 and your all set.

Good advice above, take it.

In addition, I found that many of the missions, although squad based, require the player (You) to be veryu independant.

Many others have successfully completed the missions doing what they are told, and staying in formation, I was successful using that tactic too, but it is always an option to go "Rambo" and runn out of formation, disregard what you are told in the readio, and go to where the enemy is, and kill them before your fellow troops get there.

A great thing about the game is that there are so many different ways to complete the missions.

Some things you will get better at are:

1) Aiming.

You have to get better at killing the enemy, because in amny siuations, even when you are in formation with a full squad, you will have to take out many more enemy than anyone else in your squad. Aiming, and skilled kills are very important, as I am also a DOD playert, I find it much harder to kill in OFP, but somehow much more satisfying.

I have also used an M-16, and fired many other weapons on ranges, and these digital weapons are realistic enough to be just as challenging as the real deal. I do wish Officers, and Crewmen had sidearms, though. Would be nice to pull out the Colt .45 when the M-16 runs out of ammo.

2) replay, replay replay.

Unfortuneatrely, many of the scenarios that you come across happen the same way every time, at elast from the start. Obviously, things change as contact is made... One time, your fellow soldier takes out the BMP, and the Enemy squad inside, but another time through, he gets hit, or he misses twice, and the sceneario is changed from a simple "kill the enemy before he engages you" to "You now have to face 10 more enemy foot soldierts with a supporting armored vehicle..."

From the start, though, everything stays in place, and reacts the same way, so as you replay the missions, you already know where the enemy is, and where you can flank them, or overrun them, or lay in wait for them. Sometimes, using rambo tactics against this fore-knowledge lends to your success.

Purists will say that this is an unfair advantage, take it with a grain of salt.

When I was in Infantry training, we played with MILES gear (Laser Tag style equipment), and often got to 'replay' a mission, and by god, the second time through, we better utilized the Terrain, and knowledge that the enemy would probobly go tjhe same route, and react the same way, at least at first. Yes, it is an advantage, and somewhat unrealistic, but, it is somewhat realistic to train in such a way that you have the advantage of having trained through something often enough to have an advantage.

The OPFOR troops at Irwin have this knowledge, and use it regularly. Unfair? Maybe.

So replay, try out different tactics and strategies, see what works, and use that knowledge in the next encounter that is fresh and new to you, and you will be a better soldier.

3) aiming.

I cannot say enbough how important it is for you to get better at killing multiple enemies. you cannot always depend on your AI fellow squad memebers to cover your flank, or cover their own firing area. Just like in real life, you have to cover yourself much of the time, as well as protect your fellow soldier. For the Purists out there, it might be easier to beleive that you have an oppertunity to step up to the plate in a situation where you are in a group of guys who are ready to ship off this horrible island when you are suddenly asked to fight a war with the Soviet Union. You, and Only you, have the skills and abilites required to lead these other 'no-go's' to voctory, and with your aggressive tactics, and advnaced skills, you, and only you are the one man for the job.

Good luck!

That is something I have a problem with also.

Despite the fact that this game is intended to be a realistic team war game, you generally have to defy orders and go rambo style in order to complete the mission.

I got OPF to get away from all the other Rambo style gameplay of Quake. Unfortunately, teamwork just doesn't work with the AI unless you are the leader.

LUCAZONE : If you think that mission is tricky - try "Battlefields" in the single player missions.

There are literally hundreds of enemy troops and you have to kill every one of them to get a "mission successful".

Hint: Look out for the sniper who appears on the left up by the tree line - otherwise he'll nail all your men. The best way to deal with him is go and lie in wait for him before he gets to his sniping spot. When you've done that take his rifle and snipe away yourself.

Going rambo style is an option u have to do in the mission your stuck on like in real life, if u lost your squad you need to use initive to get home again.

Yeah i was quick to learn where the sniper was, aswell as the RPG soldier to take out the truck, so i always got them first. I finally managed to get thru this mission. I got the edge of morton, and was told to provide cover fire. Once at the specified location i ran for it. But i ran back the way we came, up threw the forest, across a valley and into another forest. That takes me back about 1000m where i can safely cross the road. Once over i ran along the tree line for cover and out flanked the russians.

Once arriving at Ea64 though, im captured. Rescued by resistance fighters, and im now with them. Ive taken control of some village in central Everon, and im driving a truck load of civilians to a castle deep in Russian territory.

Most annoying thing ive found though, is i cant save points thru the game. And when i am able to save, the game doesnt always reload back to it, sometimes i have to restart, and others will take me to other missions altogether! Its getting a real pain cos im jumping all over the place in the game.

If you mean multiple saves, search The FAQ for "multiple saves".

Other missions altogether?!?! Never heard that one before! Just guessing but maybe your 1985.SQC file is corrupted. You can download a completed campaign's 1985.SQC file from The FAQ.

Luca, I play DoD too, although I have to re-download all the patches to get to where everyone else is.

Yeah a different, but previously played mission. So the game is a complete mess, because ive got 2 different mission routes and ive advanced along both of them. So if i die in one, sometimes im reloaded into the other route and save point.

If u want i can try it out more and give u a detailed description of what happens.

Ive looked over ur site and very impressed by the level of help it offers. Thankyou for u help.
