Taviana Island for ArmA 2!

Thank you everyone! :) We've passted 100 000 views of this thread!

I can't believe that this day came, but I've basically finished the main island on Taviana - only some forests left to do now! After this I'll finish the smaller island on the other side of the huge bridge and it’s all done. This means that I'm going to release BETA 3 with the completed main island shortly, followed by the final full version of Taviana Island in a few months.

I got complaint's that there are not enough forests and places to make campsites on Taviana. So 70% of the Northern part of the island are bare, uninhabited forests , rocks and fields.

One more airport (Jaroslavski Airport) has been added! Bringing the total to 3. 2 on the main island, on the smaller island.

Jaroslav town (Jaro-slav is an old Slavic name meaning “Glory of the spring/sunâ€).. This town is named after a real person who has given me lots of help!

Tried with 1.62 and I see now that the AI can drive on the off-ramps when leaving the highways,but now I see another problem,they cant drive on the right part of the highways anymore,they just crash through the fence and drive on the other part(the left part).

This all has to do with the AI, I'm glad that it improved in 1.62 and can now use the highway exits. I hope that in future versions or ArmA 3 the AI will be able to stick to the same road instead of choosing to cross over to another one meters beside it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed (*BIS*) :wink_o:

Taviana Island BETA 3 Released!

Location and population

Taviana (Officialy: Tavianska Sovjetskaja SocialistiÄiskaja Respublika - TSSR– The Soviet Socialist Republic of Taviana) is an island country situated in the Baltic Sea approximately 120km off the coast of Lithuania or Kaliningrad. It has a population of approximately 1 500 000 inhabitants of who 90% are ethnic Slavs called “Rustakiâ€, Russians or Poles and 10% ethnic Lithuanians. The capital and second largest city of the republic is Sabina which is located on the Southern coast of lake Umag, has a population of approximately 150 000 and has the republics main international airport.

The official spoken language on Taviana is Tavianian (Tavijanski Jazik) which is an Eastern Slavic language written in a variation of the Latin alphabet based on Jan Hus’ modern Czech alphabet. Lithuanian, Russian and Polish are also officially recognised languages of the republic.

Religion

The largest religious group consisting of 70% of Tavianas population are Orthodox Christians, the second major religious group in the republic are Catholics consisting of approximately 15% population where as 15% of the population have no religion.

Independence and the revolution

Following the 1917 uprising against the Tsarist autocracy Taviana gained independence from the Russian empire and established a Socialist government lead by the SPT (SocialistiÄiskaja Partija Taviany – The Socialist party of Taviana) to the present day. A 50 meter statue of Lenin was also built in the capital cities main square called (Sredmestje Vladimira IliÄa Lenina - The Square of Vladimir Illich Lenin) to commemorate the 1917 revolution.

Economy

Approximately 50% Tavianas economy consists of the extraction of natural resources such as oil and gas which are drilled mainly on the islands North coasts. Fishing and farming form another 35% of the republics economy while heavy industry such as metal works, chemical plants and shipyards from the remaining 15% of the economy.

Wars

874 – The first recorded conflict on Taviana took place on the site where today’s port Molotovsk stands in the year 874 between Slavic migrants from the East and native Nordic inhabitants which were eventually forced out of the island.

1240 – 1241 – In the year 1240 Norwegian forces invaded Taviana in an attempt to conquer the island but were forced out one year later in the final battle that took place on the fields of Stari Bor.

1015 – In the year 1015 the Roman empire launched a series of failed attempts to conquer the island.

1600-1611 – In the years between 1600 – 1611 Taviana was invaded by Swedish forces during the Polish-Swedish war but where forced off the island by Polish forces in the battle on the fields on Novi Bor.

1625-1629 – In the years between 1625 – 1629 Taviana took part in the Polish-Swedish war fighting on the Polish side.

1914–1918 (World war 1)- Taviana remained mostly untouched by World War 1 although some conflicts were fought in Prussia and Kaliningrad in attempts to seize the provinces from German control. The years between 1914 – 1918 also saw the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 which gave Taviana independence from Tsarist rule and in which the Socialist Republic of Taviana was born.

1939–1945 (World War 2) – World War 2 was a very dark chapter in Taviana’s History. The island was invaded by the Third Reich which forced the Socialist government and the Taviana armed forces in to exile in the Soviet Union where the Taviana armed forces merged with the Red Army and fought against the Third Reich. While fighting continued the Jewish population of Taviana was deported to death camps in Poland while the native population of Taviana was forced in to labour, manufacturing weapons.

In the last phases of World War 2 Taviana was liberated by Red army troops and surviving troops of the Taviana armed forces who reinstalled the socialist government.

1945 onwards – From 1945 onwards Taviana saw a large number of Lithuanian, Russian and Polish migrants feeling from the destroyed European mainland who took on the task of re-building the republic.

Today Taviana is still one of the Soviet Union’s key allies and serves as an important strategic location for the Soviet Union as well as a important submarine repair base.

What does this BETA version contain?

This BETA version contains the entire part of the island from the previous release and also features

approximately 20km² of new land in the Northern area of the island, including dozens of custom models

with custom textures, such as a cable car, motorway, tomb, airport building, underground train

stations, a race track and much more...

This is a BETA version which is fully game ready, and ready for missions to be made on, however some

bugs may still be present. No further changes will be done to the completed areas of the island seen

in this BETA in future releases, however if you do spot a bug, please report it.

What is this BETA version for?

- To present what I have accomplished since the release of the previous BETA version.

- To release a version of the island with bugs that were present in the previous version removed.

This addon requires ArmA 2 or ArmA 2 Combined Arms, there is no difference in terms of functionality.

THIS ADDON IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH STANDALONE ARMA 2: OPERATION ARROWHEAD!

To install this addon follow the instructions bellow:

1) Launch the Taviana Island BETA 3 Installer.exe installer and follow the onscreen instructions.

The default ArmA 2 installation path is:

(Where "X" stands for the drive on which ArmA 2 is installed.)

Hi,

congrats on the updated release.

I noticed some FPS lags at the newly added jail island. It seems the amount of interiors causes heavy lags. Would it be possible that you make the jail barracks enterable? I tried to get into there but i didnt find a way in :D

Thanks. Yes the FPS drops A LOT on the jail island :sad: As a result I’m thinking of making only one wing enterable with interiors and the rest un-enterable with no interior to ease the number of models in the area and remove the lag.. The jail isn’t done yet so I will definitely make it enterable all the way from the outside in the next release :wink_o:

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Well sounds like a good trade-off to make only 1 wing enterable and replace the other barracks with barracks without interior. I like the jail island layout very much, well done. Just an idea, you could add a helipad somewhere there :)

Me too, but when I released BETA 1, I got so many people telling me "I can't see the custom objects on your island, I can't see this, I can't see that" so I had to tell them to extract all the .pbos and so on... So now that I got even more .pbos for oil rigs and stuff I figured there would be even more confusion :sad:

Maybe it would be better if I release two download links, .zip file and .exe installer?

when goofing around the cities, the fps stutters constantly, and I checked the rpt file, it's keeping write numerous "Error: Vertex shader ID out of limits", which I think the reason of stutters

you know.... community changed "a little" , OFP users with their knowledge, skills and ... were different ;)

some of today's users even have problem with google bans , some other are far underaged to Arma limits (came to Arma community seeing "desert special forces with SCAR")

or "want professional DLC from professional studio" (or try to make rats race between addonmakers etc.)

That aside, it's a beautiful island.

So often in this game we see huge islands that are vast tracts of uninteresting nothingness with a few copy/pasted forests - you can see how the trees are all in a line on parade. Or tiny maps that are painstakingly detailed, but too small to be of wide use.

But this is very different. The gently undulating topography, the sympathetic town design, the rail and road network have all be tweaked to such an extent that they *look natural*. That's a very hard trick to pull off, but he's done a great job here. It's big, but it has the attention to detail.

Couple of thoughts - the mountains are too steep, they are effectively dead ground. Even in countries that have some mountains, people do live there. Perhaps it's too late to ask, but

On the dual carriageways, the AI sometimes drive on the wrong side and take to smashing through the central reservation when they realise they've got it wrong.

The roundabouts - the AI almost always go round them the wrong way. :)

Ai pilots get a bit confused when flying near the suspension bridge.

The Bar building still glitches from time to time,the difference is that it doesn't glitch everytime now,pain in the ass building isn't it?:p

Also not sure what happened between Beta 2 and Beta 3 but I took a hit in fps in Sabina(never had probs with the capital or island in general),this kinda worries me because I was the only one and another AI soldier on the map.

Regarding AI driving its really funny to see them drive completely crazy on highways,driving on the left part of it but opposite direction,driving on emergency lane.Is there any chance you could improve pathfinding further or it's 100% fault of AI??

Very nice to see the island completed,really like the north part,you kept it less populated which is a big plus when making some guerilla missions.The mountains could be pimped up a little with more trees or rocks especially the top part,the base of the mountains is well covered.Anyway your choice.:)

Nice work mate! Really good map! Hope to see some rooms enterable in your hotels on the future ;)

Some tips from me in order to make this map more beautiful than it is.

1) Prison Island

Except from the doors that are not working on the perimeter and the interion that i couldnt fin either..

I found a bed on the air at the right side of the front door.

For some reason in the main city i cant see the school buildings. I only see this:

3) Tram Main station

I saw that you had some car bars. when i tried to get myself on them...

The bars left and right work correctly, only the center needs something.

4) I have marked with my mouse the location of a bug. In this area below, when you move towards the sea the player stucks in the line of the sidewalk.

It would be awesome if someone would make a script that makes the ski-lifts move/be enter able. It could make for some awesome over-the-top action with heli's.
