Entos 10 Posted August 14, 2010 Just bought Operation Arrowhead to find after 5-10 mins of play the game shuts down my machine. I've got all the latest drivers and an almost new, high-spec laptop that should be able to handle gfx easily. Is this a known problem and is there a fix? Cheers. rexehuk 16 Posted August 14, 2010 One would guess overheating... run some monitoring tools with HWmonitor and GPUz and make them log. Post the logs when it next crashes.
echo1 0 Posted August 14, 2010 If it just randomly dies without any errors or blue screens, it's almost certainly a hardware failure. Does the laptop get particularly hot before it fails?

Not that I've noticed, will start to pay more attention now though. If it's a hardware failure wouldn't it do the same when running other games and programs? Murklor 10 Posted August 14, 2010 If it's a hardware failure wouldn't it do the same when running other games and programs? All games are handled differently... If the game is shutting down the PC completely it is certain that it is hardware failure. There is simply nothing in the game that could cause a system shutdown - it would crash instead. Possibly bluedump and maybe even freeze up completely, but its really rare today with Vista/Windows7. I havent seen any bluedumps for like 5 years+ despite of games crashing all over the place. It may just be a driver issue with the game, which means that few other games are affected... Easiest way to check for generic hardware fault: run Furmark and Prime95 for a couple of hours or something. Its quite possible that you want an older driver rather than latest! The 9 series is old today, its two generations past.

I disagree that your laptop should be able to easily handle Arrowhead as its a mobile graphics card. But if its forcing a shutdown the likely culprit is overheating, whether it be from the CPU or Graphics Card.
Psycho78 10 Posted August 16, 2010 One simple thing to try, try running with a fan blowing on the laptop. That should give you some indication whether it's a heat-related issue. I'd also ensure that your laptop runs at 100% speed when plugged into the wall, I've noticed laptops trying to save power even when plugged in.
